If I get the option to purchase a new monitor do you have any suggestions or
    brands/models to avoid?
Actually not really, I dont see a whole lot of monitors coming through the
shop, just a few Compukes and HP's...I personally run an Optiquest V55(15") and
I really like the features and sharpness it has for being one of the
cheaper-priced monitors. I guess I would probably stick with one of the better
name brand monitors, like Sony and Philips/Magnavox or Sylvania. Usually the
Computer name-brand monitors(H-P, Compaq, etc...) seem to be a bit overpriced
for the screen quality you get.

The Sony's that I've seen 17",19", and 32"(or something big like that) are
absolutely stunning! Probably because of the Trinitron-style CRT construction,
That Sony 32incher seems nearly as clear as my little 15" but BIG!!! The guy
who owns it is a Descent player, and I got dizzy watching him in action....just
imagine using that in a CFS dogfight!

Basically, if you can...check out the monitor you intend to purchase if
possible. Because, like TV's, each brand will have a little different picture
quality...even at the exact same vid card settings.

Sorry it's not a real definitive answer, but that's what I would look for.

I ended up with a Viewsonic 17" with flat panel. Probably a trinitron in it.
Very very nice picture. The question is that my video card, Diamond Monster
Fusion, runs so hot that you can not touch it for more than a few seconds.
Even when the monitor shuts off in the standby mode it stays hot. My refresh
is set for optimal which works out to 100 hz. Does a higher refresh cause the
card to run hot? If so why is it still hot when the monitor is off? Any ideas?
