Hi all. I've got a frame rate problem that has me and Microsoft stumped. Maybe
someone out there knows. I'm running CFS and FS98 on a P200 with 32 Ram, C
master drive and D slave (both on D because of space), Matrox Mystique 2D card
with Diamond Monster II 3D card - 12 megs of ram, Creative 32x cd-rom, and
Creative AWE 64 sound card. For some reason which eludes everyone so far, my
frame rates with ground texture enabled is only about 8 fps. If I turn just the
ground texture off, the frame rate leaps up to 15-35 fps. I've tried several
other 3D cards to no better effect. I've turned off all TSRs, and fooled
endlessly with memory changes in Win98, including Cd-rom read-ahead stuff.Still
no change. The funny thing is, the other P200 in the house runs both fine,
although it is a different system. Even my friend's P166 runs both with better
frame rates. Why, with 8 megs of 3D card memory devoted solely to texture
memory, am I getting this irritating problem? I am ready to pull my hair out
over this. The only thing left that I can think of is maybe some sort of driver
conflict, except I can't find any. No better in 2D by the way. Even with a
dedicated 2d/3d card like the Itense Voodoo rush or Creative Banshee. It
somehow involves Microsoft texture scenery. Janes F15 performs flawlessly by
contrast with all the options on. So does F18 Korea for that matter. What is it
    HI!

You're not alone with your slow frame rate problems! I too, am running both
FS98 and MS-CFS. Frame rates were very slow and choppy to be really
useable/flyable at all, so I went out and invested in 64 MB of extra RAM (now
96 MB total) and bought a new 3D card - STB Velocity 4400 w/16MB. My machine is
a 233 MHz AMD-K6 with just standard OEM stuff, not including the extra RAM and
video card I bought recently. Now I get frame rates in the 4-12 fps range and
this is with everything turned off/disabled to allow both sims to run at their
fastest. Even still, 4-12 fps isn't all that great, but it's a bit better than
what it was prior to installing the extra RAM and video card. When I shift to
external view (while flying), then frame rates are 20++ fps range.
So, I dunno what to tell you except that my problem is very similar to yours. I
think Microsoft needs to re-do their software flight sims to allow faster frame
rates. Only other solution is to buy a brand new system with the latest and
greatest goodies, but just to fly CFS or FS98, it's a big waste of money.
See if you can get the frame rates in the 8-9 fps range by tweaking your
settings and trying different display resolutions. Flying in anything faster
than 640 X 480 w/16 colors will just slow your frame rates even more. I'm no
expert, but can only relate the similar experience and results I've obtained by
trying some add-on goodies. Hope you can get the slow frame rate problem solved
    - good luck!
about CFS and FS98 that so strangles my system? Any help greatly appreciated.

    Thanks... I hope.

You write "What is it about CFS and FS98..." Unfortunately, I don't have
an answer, but it would seem evident that it isn't something about CFS or
FS98, but rather something about that particular system that is causing
problems, since you state that another P200 runs everything fine.. I'd
concentrate on hardware and driver issues with the system before looking
    at the software.. Good luck!!

It's your Mystique card. I've got a 220 w/4mb and having the same trouble.
They mention that Mystique cards are flat out not compatable with CFS!

I have a Maxtrox Mystique 220 3d card and It works just fine 11-20fps,you might
want to jump over to matrox web site and download the latetest MS certified
drivers from them, I run a P133 32Mb ram w/MS force feedback in 1028x768,If you
shut down some of your Tsr's (ctrl-alt-del>end task) you find that your frame
    rates multiply like rabbits
