I have flown used v5.1 that a friend of mine owns. So when I had an opportunity to purchase v4.0 from
another friend who didn't want his anymore, I jumped at the chance.

I am very surprised to see that is VERY similar to v5.1. Everything seems to be there except the
    photorealism and sound card support.

I also notice that there also are a collection of Scenery Disks available (I saw a reference to Scenery
    Disk #12).

My friend only gave me the one diskette with the excecutable.

    Questions:

1.) What exacly are Scenery Disks?

2.) Are the available to purchase anywhere?

    Hi,

Do you really mean that FS5.1 is VERY similar to FS4.0 ?

Scenery disks are .SCN files which are nice to have when you've had enough
with the old "boring" default scenery. There are some avialable here at
    flightsim.com ( I think ) in the FS4 scenery library. I've found a very nice
one here like the FAREA.ZIP - which is a scenery file of Eastern Asia.
Some has to be purchased, like the SD11 , SD12 , USAWEST etc... but I don't think you would
think you'll find these as easy today. Note that you need ASD and SGA for
    the sceneryfiles to work !

1.) What exacly are Scenery Disks?
These are commercial products that add additional scenery detail to that
which comes with FS4. Some of these were quite important and popular at
    one time.

2.) Are the available to purchase anywhere?
Well, you're talking about products that were obsoletely some 2 or 3 years
ago when FS5 came out so it's going to be tough. Flight Sim Central might
    still have some FSCentral

If you have AAF you can use the extensive library of FS4 scenery online
    here too...just download away.

I would assume by your emphasis of "very" that you don't agree. Could you expound on that?

What exactly is ASD, SGA, or AAF?

    Hi there !

ASD stands for Aircraft Scenery Designer. Applying this to your FS4, you'll
be able to design wonderful static sceneries. Though it won't let you design
beautiful aircrafts like the ones you download, but it's needed for you to
see any of these aircrafts from spot view. Otherwise your machine would
stuck up! SGA is Sounds Graphics Add-on , which is great to have for those
digitized sound effects like realstic egine sounds etc... AAF is Aircraft
Adventure Factory. This is what talented people use to design those
incredible aircrafts (some are avialable here at flightsim.com) .

I used the word "VERY" , as my real question was : How similar is FS4 to
FS5, would you explain your opinion further ?

    Hope this helps...

    What is AAF?
I can't remember the exact definition any more, but it was the add-on that
was used to create scenery for FS4. I believe you also need it to use the
    scenery that others have created.

Since it hasn't been sold for quite a few years now I really don't know
where you could find it anymore.

As for functionality, there doesn't seem to be any difference. I see very
similar if not the same performance flying either simulator.

FS5.x (and everyone out there correct me if I am wrong) biggest and most
obvious advantage is its photorealistic instruments, the addition of a mixture
knob, and a prop pitch actuator for flying a constant speed prop mode.
In the lear jet, with the enhaced graphic capability, one has the magnetic
compass on a vertical stalk that splits the windsheild. Also there is sound
    card support for realistic sounds.

Also, since it comes on CD-ROM, there are goo-gobs of sceneries. The flying
space is world wide; all corners of the globe. Just about every VOR/NDB
station is already installed. Many more airports exist, but there are
usually no buildings on the premises. There are fueling stations, though.

Well worth the upgrade, but you better have a decent (speed) CD-ROM drive.
