For some reason I cannot get Paint Shop Pro to properly view many of the
texture bitmaps in FS 2002. I had no problem with FS 2000. Most, but not all
of the bitmaps in the FS2002/scenedb/world/texture folder look 2/3 black and
the other 1/3 a bunch of colored stripes. Anybody know what I'm doing wrong?

Hi James Paul "tucson Coyote" Bender here

The Answer is Simple for the 2/3 of the Bmps that are black..They are what is
called "DXT" (Short For Direct X Texture Compression) Compressed...you need a
Program like DXT to BMP To read and open them...

Now as for the other 1/3 that is a Mystery to me.. But as for the Others You
need a Program you can find called DXT to BMP that will read them..(A Lot of
the Aircraft Files are also Like that..so it's Useful for them too!

    Hope that Helps

The Aircraft Textures are in DXT1 and DXT3 formats. The Ground textures are all
in DXT1 format. No paint program will view these directly as they don`t have
    the appropriate format filters.

The reason you get 1/3 stripes and 2/3 black is that Bmps are read from the
bottom and DXT is 1/4 of the filesize of normal 16 bit. PSP is trying to read
the data (garbled because of the format) and runs out of data part way up the
    image.

Those who have FS2002 Pro can use the ImageTool program (in the Gmax folders
somewhere) to convert these formats. Those who don`t will have to use DXTBmp
    from http://fly.to/mwgfx/

Note that if you want to preserve the reflective qualities of the default
Aircraft you will need to preserve the DXT3 Alpha channel (which supplies the
    Reflectivity data) throughout your editing

Its all new stuff to the FS crowd but we have been using these "new" textures
in CFS2 for the last year ;^)
Luckily this means that most of the conversion bugs have been worked out by
    now.....
