Default How to access files in Vista ?

With a new computer, running Vista Home, Im trying to open the MY DOCUMENT folder to get to my MS9 files but keep getting the message "Acess is denied". Ive tried one menu after the next trying to gain access but no luck. Does anyone know the simple way to allow these folders to be opened? I knew I was going to hate Vista!

Fear not. It probably has something to do with administrator rights. Loki or jwenting will be along at some point, and they will know.

Correct, it's to do with access rights.
Log in with an administrator account, right click on the directory you want to change the rights to, select properties, go to the security tab, and change the rights for authenticated users (or the specific account you want).
You may also have to add the account you normally use to the authenticated users group if it's not there yet (I believe it should be), which I think is done from the "advanced" button on the same dialog.

Button names could be a bit different, I don't have an English Vista loaded at the moment.

You can do this for an entire drive as well, but it's not generally recommended.

Thanks for your help on this, but Im lost on this one. I tried following your instructions to no avail. Im the only user on this computer and I still cant get access to my files! Maybe you can lay it out in simpler(?) terms if possible. Sorry to such a dummy! thanks

u cant get on the administrator account unless u edit the registry or a program that makes it visible

or you can start the computer in safe mode, then the admin account should show up

also try disabling UAC user account control in Control Panel>User Accounts>Mange UAC (summin like that)> then uncheck the box and restart u machine

You've both had your say, now let's get back to business. I (a moderator of this forum) don't want to see this technical forum descend into non-technical bickering.
