Would a corrupt disk make FS crash?

Just started simming again after taking a break. When i installed FS9 again it stopped at 94% and said there was a corrupt file while trying to install world.cab if im not mistaken. I ignored the problem, then noticed the texture folder under FS9/scenery/world wasnt there. So i took them from the disk and manually placed them there, then the FS seemed to work fine. But after flying a bit, the game will just crash and go to my desktop after playing for about 15 minutes usually. Could this be do to the corrupt file on disk 4? I want to find out before i go purchase another game just to have an uncorrupted disk, yet still run into the same problem.

The following wacky procedure got me out of a similar situation ...

Try using Windows Explorer to copy the entire contents of Disk 4 to a folder on your hard drive. The resulting copy operation will proceed at relatively high speed and may cruise right over the supposed bad spot on the CD.

Then copy the contents of the hard drive folder to a blank CD and reinstall from scratch (pun not intended).

It worked for me, it may or may not work for you. If it doesn't, try gently agitating the CD in a solution of warm soapy water followed by a rinse under running warm tap water, followed by an air dry.

Finally, you may still be able to find $20 copies of FS2004 at sites such as Wal-Mart, Amazon and so on. I bought one and have it in reserve to cover situations like this in case my zany procedure ceases to work.

I tried to copy the disk but it says there is an error in the same spot where it would stop loading. I actually have made a couple smaller flights this evening without it crashing on me, so who knows. But if it does it tomorrow i might just run to the store and pick up a fresh copy of the game to see if it fixes the issue.
