Default Advice for all on frame rates

Critical to test your own system with all the different sliders in different configurations -- I recently bought a dell xps 710 QX6600, nvidia 768MB 8800 GTX ultra video card and 4mb ram -- system worked OK until I figured out that the water effects drained my frame rates considerably -- by tuning down to low 2.x or high 1.x - i can consistently run very well with all other sliders at mid to high range - including scenery at extremely dense and weather on ultra high. Main performance has been mid to high 20's in most areas -- 30-40s in sparse areas and low to high teens in major metropolitan areas (inlcuding manhatten) -- still tweaking the system but moving the water effect makes a very noticeable change on my system - basically 5-10 fps each time i move it one direction or another. The other relevant component has been autogen setting - sparse seems to work best for me but this has less effect than the water.

Traffic and clouds are the big killers on my computer.

When I first bought FSX, I turned water to the lowest setting, 0% traffic, and 0% boats. Also, auto-gen OFF.Airports looked naked...lol...
Unfortunately, even tho my frames were great at 40-50, it was FS9 all over again with photo-real scenery.(I.e. Bird's Eye View).
So what was the point I thought?
I'm not bashing, just saying the whole point (for me anyways) buying FSX was to see the improvements. I do now, with better/higher settings, of course now my frames suffer a bit.(Even with SP1)

Do you have Acceleration installed. I know there has been a lot of negative stuff said about acceleration. SP2 which is included in Acceleration doesn't seem to do much but it "seemed" to help my system with the water. I Don't have anything near your system but over the water I get decent FR. I was able to turn my water up to High 1.x-2.x and they stayed locked at 20. Something you might want to try. I you don't feel like buying Acceleration just wait a few weeks and SP2 should be a free download soon.

acceleration really sped up my framerates over water too, even with clouds turned up. still stutters over land though...

Nope. Much like the NFL's Miami Dolphins and wins, I'm staying clear.

wow. i get around 10-20fps pretty much anywhere and have all my sliders around half - to - 3 quarters level (traffic set to low) and have an:

    XP3200+
    512MB Geforce 7600
    1.5gig RAM

Not sure its worth me upgrading as it does not look like much improvement.

I agree with that. I was going to go for a new mobo and vid card. But, it appears that ms is preparing work on the next version of fs..so, I think i will wait until then to see what I will need.

as for fsx, it does work fairly well on my older system, even with water at 2x. water, imo is the best scenery difference between fsx and fs9...anyway, enough of my babbling...back to work...:-)
