Thread: System Freeze!!!

  1. Default System Freeze!!!

I need some seroius help? I am currently running a PC with the following specs:

    AMD Athlon 900mhz
    384mb SDRAM
    Hercules Prophet II 64mb

The problem is i start FS2002 and go flying, then all of a sudden my system freezes, WHY? i have tried the latest drivers from hercules and that makes the Flight Sim totaly unusable with a freeze as soon as it starts up. I have also tried to update windows but that has done nothing.

If i can't sort this out my PC will be taking flying lessons.......Out the window.

Please someone help, any advice is better than none

    Cheers the Cheesed off Bloke.

Here are some things to look at:

Sound card and driver versions. Closings all Terminal Stay Resident (TSD) programs working in the background, press <ctrl><alt><delete> one time and see what is running. Close most everything except Explorer and Systray. Another way is to hit START, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Information, Tools, System Configuration Utility, StartUp. Select those programs you feel are using resources and de-select them. Be careful what you de-select as some programs are necessary.

Look in your BIOS for Heat/Thermal Temperatures and see how hot your Athlon 900 is getting. If it is in the upper 55-60deg C, it is too hot. Check you cooling fans for dust, carefully clean the fans, unblock input/output airways, run with the cover off to see if it helps.

Check for IRQ sharing between your graphics card, sound card, modems, and NICs. Place the graphics card on it own IRQ, if possible.

Also you might want to check your c:\temp and c:\windows\temp directories to clear out any *.tmp files in either of those directories. Also if you feel comfortable in doing so re-address you r virtual memory setting no more than 7% above your system ram and make the space contigious that is making for example min. 411 - max. 411. This way windows knows exactly what it has to work with at all times. Making a good run of scandisk and defragmenter couldn't hurt either.
