Can 737 / 747 automatically follow flight plan?

When flying the Boeing jets, can you set the aircraft in any way to automatically make the turns on your flight plan?

Presumably this is how real aircraft systems work?

At present, I can see myself approaching way points on the GPS and then ATC come on to say "turn right heading.....". but just wondering if you can set it to make these turns?

You can set the autopilot to follow the flight plan in the GPS. It will make the turns for you.

Enter your info in the auto pilot such as alt and speed (i usually do this while I am on the ground). Then make sure the nav/gps switch is set to gps or it won't follow your gps course. If you are trying to follow a heading or ILS approach, then you put it on nav. Once this is all done and you get in the air, turn on the auto pilot master switch, click auto throttle, nav, speed, and alt hold buttons and you will be on your way. Also, when the auto pilot is engaged, you can set the sim rate to a max of 16x sim speed, no higher.
