Default The Sad Grand Canyon - Can something be done!

A while back I posted a similar note and got a suggestion for improving though it didn't look much different than FS9 when I checked out the site. I wanted to wait until SP1 which has now come out. In the meantime, I lost the links. I was unable to find the topic and the responses. Anyone with a good fix worth the money, let me know.

Also, my hope is that some of the Microsoft boys will notice how sad their new FSX Grand Canyon looks - even WORSE than the FS9, which actually wasn't too bad. At least I could find a flat place to land in the bottom of the canyon - and there are some in real life of course.

For everyones comparison pleasure I'm attaching a few pictures taken at the same spot from Google earth, FS9 and FSX.

Mesh, Autogen and graphic complexity settings were the same on the FS9 and FSX shots. Weather was removed.

The Lat/Lon in Google Earth and FS9 are for the south wall 36. 3' 55.83" N / 112. 7' 11.64" W altitude 8785'. Close to that for FSX but those settings buried me in the south wall a few feet. For some reason they moved the Grand Canyon a little farther north in FSX

Hermit Rapids is at 36. 5' 59.31"N /112. 12' 32.49"W altitude 2348' Except in FSX where they moved the Colorado river to accommodate the new real estate for the Grand Canyon

So to conclude - Microsoft - would you please fix the mighty Grand Canyon in your next service pack? You did so good on much of the other graphics. A little of your magic would do wonders here.

If anyone can shed light on a GOOD rendition of the Grand Canyon for FSX, would you post it again for me? I would greatly appreciate it.

    Thanks

    Hi,

Are those FS04 shots from a default install?

Yup! I have NO add-on scenery files with FS9. The only add-ons I used in the 2004 were a lot of aircraft.

I figure you have those results in FSX becuase your mesh resolution is too low. Try cranking it up to the max and see how it gets!

I refuse to believe that Microsoft did such an obvious mistake...

It's amazing how lousy the textures are in FSX!

Mesh settings were pegged. Resolution was pegged. Complexity was pegged.
Both FSX and FS9 were pegged. All settings the same.

In FSX the Grand canyon looks like it might 50 years after a nuclear holocaust and it has filled with nuclear dust. Try the lat/lon that I listed and see what you find.

I mentioned my disappointment with The Grand Canyon ages ago when the public beta was released. It'll need better textures to solve it and they'll be coming out at some point.

Dude, Your puter sucks. ........ Not getting anything like Your posting in Your screen shots. Your coords from above, is the screen shot below >

The altitude and coords above, put me in the side of a mountain. Slewed away from the mountain, and it lookd alot different than Your washed out shot.

Here's another (not Your coords) >

Well Randy, we weren't discussing the rim of the canyon. The canyon rim is fine with MS graphics and auto gen it looks very nice if you don't look over the rim into the sand piles below. And my post warned you about the fact that FSX decided to move the canyon off its designated area and moved it north so an adjustment in lat or altitude would have saved you the slew.

What we are talking about are the sand piles which make up the canyon and the lack of any stone walls and no water effects and the like which look pretty pathetic on your computer too even if you did post some humongous picture. I find it utterly amazing that someone looks at the picture you posted and thinks its great. FS9 looks better than that.

Now can someone who knows tell me a good program to get that will represent this natural phenomena in a way that is pleasing to the eye?
