Thread: Does a Core2duo really kick butt? Ummm Yeah! VIDEO!!!

  1. Default Does a Core2duo really kick butt? Ummm Yeah! VIDEO!!!

Ok, I just purchased and assembled my new FS rig. Here are the specs.

    Motherboard: ASUS P5N32-E SLI plus
    CPU: Core2duo 6600 2.4 ghz (overclocked to 3.4Ghz)
    RAM: OCZ Platnum PC6400 1024 x 2 (2 gigs)
    Power supply: Gamexstream 700w
Video Card: XFX Geforce 8600 256 mb PCIe
    Hard drive: Seagate 250gig 7200
    Case: Thermaltake Armor full tower.

So is this enough machine to run FSX maxed? YES!!!
Although I bump the autogen down to dense most times for more smoothness, it still doesn't become a slideshow when on very dense, even in the largest cities. I always max everything else. Lightbloom is the only thing that I really don't need so I keep it off. Ansotropic and anti aliasing are on.
And man what it does for FS9. Fully maxed...any city. I have it locked at 30fps and it never falls below that...ever!

So, here are 3 videos. The first is the computer. The next is Las vegas in FS9, and the last one is Las Vegas in FSX.
    Two things to remember here.
    1st: Both sims are maxed
2nd: I'm also running a video capture program which kills frames, and still the sims run well. The video isn't the best quality.(youtube) but you will get the idea.

    Well I don't get it.
I have got a Core Duo E6600 with a GTX 8800 and my performance is intensely mediocre. Very average. Doesn't do it for me. I bought this machine for FSX and just use it fir Ship Sim 2008 now. Very rarely fly nowadays.

i think its all about how u setup the PC and wot u choose specifically

ie. other specs, ram, motherboard etc

because i have the E6600 also but with the X1950pro and i can run it on maximum setings apart from boat traffic for sum reason, getting well into the 40's in framerates.

Yes, you can't just slap it together and go merrily on your way flightsimming with 50 fps. You have to configure the bios correctly, and configurer windows,(kill all unessesary services ect...). But having said that, your E6600 should kick the crap out of any Pentium 4 out there, strait out of the box. If I had a Geforce 8800 instead of this 8600, then I'm sure I'd be having no fps issues at all. As it is, at major airports I drop down to 10-12 fps, but rarely below that.

This might help to get the best out of a computer running games and sims:

My sims only D.I.Y. computer has similar specs:

    Motherboard: ASUS P5B Deluxe
    CPU: Core 2 Duo 6700 2.6 Ghz
RAM: Corsair 2 Gb DDR2-800 Mhz
    Video Card: Radeon X1950XT - 512 Mb PCI-Express
Hard drive: 3 x WD SATA 150 Gb 10000 rpm / 16 Mb Cache RAPTORs

and my screenshots here in this forum show what it can do with everything set to max or highest density.

Shutting down all that is not needed, WIN Services and all other programmes running in the background helps, even on a powerful computer like this. Observe my Task Bar ! ;-)

    Hey Otto,
I know this is "off topic" here but I thought your name was familiar.
I see from your screenie there that you are an MSTS fan as well, same here. Nice to see I'm not the only one that flip-flops from air ops to ground ops. lol

    Hi Steven !

Yes, I have been a trains, trams and planes fan since being a kid in Vienna before WW-2 and later when I had the money started model railway layouts. At the age of 68 I started flying for real and a year later got a PPL.

Still hoping to drive a real loco and got as far as the flight deck of a new Boeing 777 flying from London to Denver before Sept.11 ! ;-)

    Take care, O t t o.

I always wonder if everyone has installed SP1 or not when they mention their poor performance.

Nice machine and great videos! It shows how much more realistic FSX is over FS2004's low res textures. And the moving traffic, wet ground reflections, and increased autogen gives FSX a much more immersive effect. Sometimes it takes a simple side by side comparison to remind us of much more advanced FSX is.
