Thread: modifying any cgf file in FSX with Vista.

  1. Default modifying any cgf file in FSX with Vista.

I have noticed that I can not modify any cfg file In FSX with Vista. When I make some alterations in any cfg file, I go to save it, a window pops up that states I cannot save it in that file path, eg C:\Program files\MS games\MS FSX\Sim objects\airplanes\"names of aircraft"\"x"cfg file.
"make sure the name & file paths are correct" That is the location of that file!

The only way that I can alter any cfg files is to move the file to the desktop, make the changes & save it, and then move it back to where it belongs.

For those using Vista, you know what a pain that is because every move you make a Vista warning pops up asking you if you want to allow that move. I am in as the administrator. This is tedious when you are making changes.

Does this happen to everyone, and is there a quicker way of doing things?

What ever happened to the days where you load up and fly without spending hours modifing things

    Thanks in advance,

    George

Yes, but it is in the program files folder, and hence read only for non admin processes.

Then disable it, it is your choice if you want it.

You are logged in with an account that has the right to elevate processes to admin rights (and this is where the popup asking permission is displayed). You are (luckily) not starting processes as ad admin by default.

You can disable the UAC (or whatever it is called) and run processes with admin rights all the time (at your own risk, I would certainly not recommend it, though I have done it for SHORT periods of time on new installs until I got the settings as I wanted it).

Or start notepad as administrator (by right clicking it), and then open the file from within this notepad (you can't drag and drop it as you can't drag from non-admin processes like the explorer into an admin process).

Yes, it suck - but given the alternatives, this is slighty less bad :)
