Thread: Help with installing add-on aircraft

  1. Default Help with installing add-on aircraft

    Hi,

Can someone give me step by step instructions on installing add-on planes to FSX. I tried looking for a guide here on flightsim.com but I've been un able to find any help.

I have never tried adding new aircraft before so I'm un sure of what to do.

    Thanks for any help.

Are they payware or freeware? All of the payware and even most of the freeware I've gotten have pretty good instructions. Generally speaking, make sure it works with FSX. If it's freeware, look for the Readme.txt in the files. That's usually where the developer puts his download instructions. Payware of course should be as simple as inserting the disc and letting the pc take it from there.

    Hi,

The best information on installing aircraft, that I've been able to find, is located here:
    http://www.flightsimulatorguide.com/addons.htm

Many freeware aircraft having missing features (no VC and the like) so it's hard to know if there's a problem or it's the way the plane was designed. A good way to start is to add aircraft from FS2004 that are no longer included in FSX. These will all work exactly as they did in FS2004. An excellent step by step guide is here:

Well, first thing is, make sure it supposedly works with FSX. Then, it will depend on how the author released the file archive:

    1. All the necessary files will be in a "zip" file, including subfolders, etc. Once you get used to using file archivers, and are familiar with your Flight Simulator paths, this is actually a pretty easy way. The first thing in either method, is look through the file archive for a text file named something like "read me" or "read me first" or something like that. This will usually give you instructions regardinng setup. What you must usually do is "unzip" the entire file archive into the correct folder, usually

    C:\Program Files\MicrosoftGames\MicrosoftFlightSimulatorX\Simobjects\
    Airplanes.

Your path might be different, depending on how you installed FSX. (I just use C:\FSX because I make a lot of changes and its easier to navigate to the folders). Once the extraction is done, you should have a new subfolder under \Airplanes, for example \Beech18, or whatever, which will contain all the files and subfolders needed. Now, start FSX; you may get a "security warning" asking if you want to use certain guages; pick "Yes" or "OK" usually about 7 or 8 times, and then that's it, you should see your new plane with the other aircraft.

    2. The author inculded a setup script with the files. This will usually still be a "zipped" file, but instead of a lot of small files, there will be several files and one large archive or .exe file within the first archive. With these, all you normally have to do is unzip all the files to a temporary directory, and then run the "setup" or "install" file-it will run an "Install Wizard" that will place the files in the right place for you, usually make shortcuts on your START menu and desktop, etc. Then start FSX, you might have to approve the gauges, as above, and then you should be set to go.

    I hope this was helpful.
