Default How long to Defrag a 40gig HDD?

I have never Defraged a Hard Drive before and was wondering how long you all think it will take to do a 40Gig 7200rpm?

If you've never ran degrag on your PC and you've done a lot of stuff on it, it could take hours. You could probably take a good nap while it does it's thing. After it's done, you'll notice a considerable difference.

Well yes, I have done a lot on the HDD, around 7gig used and abused:-).

I've heard of people taking all night I think. More than a good nap for me.

P.S you wrote "defgrag'! I like the sound of that better:-)

LAST EDITED ON Jul-22-02 AT 06:55AM (EDT)[p]I did a defrag on a friend's PC the other day, and it took a couple of hours, and it was only a 3 GB HD. When you start the process, you'll see a map of where information is stored on your HD. If used blocks are scattered everywhere, it'll take a long time to move everything around and get everything situated like it should be. If you've got a little over 20GB of free space, it won't take you that long unless the information that you do have on your HD is scattered out on the HD.

If you've never donw a defrag, expect it to take most of the night. Start the defrag utility, make sure everything is proceeding normally, shut off your monitor and say good night. In the morning, turn on the monitor and it will be complete. After this, if you defrag every week or two, it takes only a fraction of the time.

If you have never defragged the 40 you have, expect about 6-8 hours. Once you do it after that, It should take only 1-2 hours at the most. How long do you think It took me to do my 100GB the first time up ..... If you answered 18 hours, you're right.

As the others have said, it could take a long time. To help ensure that everything goes smooth, (no re-starts, etc., due to A/V programs), do a search for PowerDefrag. This is a simple to install little program which will shutdown all un-necessary applications, and will defrag faster than Windows defrag.

I have a 4gig HD, and it usually takes me 2-3 hours, so I'd be prepared for a long wait, lol

All I can say is that it will take you a while, and you'd best just let it run over night. I know my laptop HD is only 6 Gb, and it took forever... (ofcourse, I do get the impression my laptop defrags exceptionally slow...)
