    Default Startup Problem!

I have been running FSX since October with no problems. Then last weekend I double clicked the FSX icon and nothing! It just hangs at the splash screen. I checked all other programs on my computer everything is working fine.

    I even did a maintenance re-install -- nothing.

So, like many of us I had to decide if I wanted to uninstall and reinstall. I decided to wait and try to get Microsoft Customer Service to help.

I sent them an E-mail and the Customer Service Rep responded that he was sorry for my trouble and said that I had 2 choices. 1. change my Video Card or 2. return the product for a refund.

Note: I upgraded my card in October -- again as I said the program was running fine.

I E-mailed this guy and told him that returning the product for a refund was not an option. He replied that he would be gone for 2 days and then get back to me. It sounds like Microsoft is not very interested in helping anyone (big surprise).

    My system is as follows:

    Dell Dimmension 3000
    Intel 3GHZ HT
    2GB RAM
ATI RADEON X1300 VIDEO WITH 256MB RAM (Driver up to date)
160GB HD (only 1/4 full) yes I defrag!
20" Flat panel Monitor with DVI connection

Again everything was running good (FR was not that great at busy Aiports).

Does anyone else have a workaraound or fix other than reinstall?

I do not want the hassel of reinstalling and the possible problem of re-activation.

Thanks in advance for any help on this matter.

Possibly, you have changed something that is affecting FSX. Have you tried restoring to an earlier time (Windows XP), before last weekend, but not before the FSX install.

Before doing anything drastic, try renaming your logbook. It's found here...

    C:\Documents and Settings\--your name---\My Documents\Flight Simulator X Files\logbook.bin

Rename it to logbook1.bin and try again. Lot's of folks have seen this and can occure after doing an edit to your logged flights. The output gets corrupted. Anyhow, this is a quick test to find out and may save a lot of hassle.

Are you sure that you did not do anything like:

    1. Updating a driver
    2. Installing a program
    3. Deleting/uninstalling another program
    4. Installing/removing a FSX add-on

    and so on?

It worked! That was the problem. WOW!! Renamed it like you said and poof it worked again. Now maybe I can enjoy flying other than slow Frame Rates which I am still working out.

Thank you again for the help. I should beat the crap out of the guy from Microsoft (LOL) but I would have to fly to India to find him. Not worth the time or trouble or cost.

    Happy flying.....

Glad it worked. There are some downloads over at AVSIM to do some basic repair work to the logbook, and one post talked about using a hex editor (I have Cygnus) and was able find a corrupted entry in mine. Now all the flights I've done since Oct 7 are still there.

Below my signature is a link to the particular forum with edit info.

    Happy new year!
