Thread: Stopping ON the runway.

    Default Stopping ON the runway.

    Hi Forum,

First of all, thanks for the Happy Birthday greeting.

But, like just about every other soul here, I'm having growing pains with FSX, like smoking tires, no buildings at terminals, and such as that, which with time, and y'all's smarts, I believe I can overcome a lot of it. I did with FS9, anyway.

Every time I have landed with this system, I CANNOT get the airplane stopped! Yesterday, I flew a 737 from Norman Manley in Jamaica to Orlando. Almost a flawless flight, including the ILS approach to 17L. I turned off the autopilot at 200 feet to flair and make the landing. Touchdown was perfect, right on the centerline, on the numbers! Then the thing ran away with me. I couldn't get it stopped or even slowed down, even with my finger on the brake trigger! It took off again even, so I shut it down.

What do you think is the problem here?

Turning the AP off does not automatically turn off the auto-throttle. My guess is that it was still on. That is why you could not slow down since the plane was trying to accelerate to reach it's assigned speed.

I'll have to completely agree with the first reply. You most likely forgot to turn off the autothrottle. Even if you brake, with the autothrottle on, the airplane will compensate and add more power to stay at the given speed.

Yep - autothrottle. Done it myself many times.

We could do with a CHIRPs section in flightsim.com really, couldn't we?!

I am better the first two replies are correct. You need to turn off the auto-throttles and put the throttles at idle. Then once you touchdown throw in reverse thrust.

    Hmmmm...Let's see, 1, 2, 3, 4 replies all saying the same thing. Why not a a 5th?

I think you need to turn off your auto throttle. But that's just my $.02

    Guys,

HA, Ha, That's funny... I really appreciate the 5 answers I got, but turning the A/T off was the FIRST thing I did, even before I hit "Z" to stop the A/P!

However, and you're gonna hate me for this, I took off using the A/P to get up to speed, then I kicked in the ALTITUDE HOLD around 125 kts IAS on the runway, and the airplane rotated around 140 kts. I NEVER engaged my joystick throttle during the entire flight. When I landed, I forgot about that little part, and likewise, I didn't advance or retard the throttle on my joystick, so the plane took back off from Orlando! Once in the air I had everything off, tying in vain to get the engines to unwind, but they didn't. Then I thought about the joystick throttle. I advanced it from the OFF position and retarded it, and guess what? The engines unwound!! So I guess, if the joystick throttle is not utilized, it pays to utilize it in the landing phase, huh?

And, by the way, explain to me please the procedure for REVERSE THRUST, as F2 works sometimes and sometimes it doesn't. It did not work on this landing!

Now that leaves the "smoking tires" and the lack of buildings at the terminal to deal with, but I don't think my computer is capable of too much scenery. It's a fairly new "gamer" but the kahones are lacking, I believe.

    Thanks guys,
    Roy

Concerning brakes, I always edit the CFG-files - I think most FS-planes brake a little quicker than in real life.

So maybe you have a corrupt CFG-file?

Concerning reverse thrust, I've never heard about that problem. Go into your key-setting - maybe reverse thrust isn't even controled by F2 on your PC...

I think you have to hold the F2 key for a few seconds before the reverse thrust kicks in. And to turn it off, simply add some throttle, just a little bit.

    Hope this helps!

I've done this myself (at least more than once). You mentioned you didn't retard the throttle on landing. The thrust reversers will not operate unless the throttles are at idle. As mentioned, you have to hold down the F2 key to get them to operate also.

    Enjoy!!.
