Thread: Mooney Bravo in FSX

  1. Default Mooney Bravo in FSX

I'm just returning to Flight Simulator after a few years off. The lastest version I own is FS2000 Professional.
I recently downloaded the FSX beta, and the Mooney Bravo seems to have quite a bit less power than it did in FS2000.
Doing a by the book cruise climb, with 34" MP and 2400 RPM, I could maintain 120 KIAS and 800-900 feet per minute to well over 10,000 feet. In the FSX beta, I can barely keep 120 knots climbing 500 fpm at like 4000 feet. What's the deal? Is the FS2000 model inaccurate? Or did they mess something up in the FSX beta version that will be fixed in the final?

    Weather conditions? Gas/Air mixture?

Also, do you fly using the true airspeed or the indicated airspeed? The indicated one will always get in lower numbers when you gain altitude.

I'm not sure about all the game options just yet. I'm pretty sure I had indicated airspeed (which is what I always used in FS2000) and auto mixture set. Weather was set for clear skies. Maybe they just made the engine too powerful in FS200.

Ok here is what I found in FS_9 taking off from KSEA "default Mooney-Bravo".
    Weather CAVU. 29.9" baro.
With your settings 34" manifold 2,400rpm 120kts ias 119kts ground speed gps.
Full load. Gear up, flaps up, cowl flaps 3% open, trim up till hands off.
    600fpm thru 3,000' small emprovment thru 3500'
as I refind trim to 120 ias 700fpm thru 4,000'
    600fpm thru 5,000' and average 550-600fpm to 10,000'.
Now for FS_X same plane, same weather, some turbulance.
It cleared 2,500. at outer marker.700fps thru 3,000'.
And 600fps-700fps to 10,000' as I refined trim to hands off.
Note I feel that the FS_X Mooney flys smoother and faster than the
FS_9 Moony. Don't forget that we are only 36lbs from gross!!
This may not be the saffest configuration. 10% for mom,10% for Wife, kids,
insurance agent, freinds, dog(s) /cat(s) ECT. That is 10% for all.
Otherwise you whould never get off the couch.
So that is 80% fuel(more than 4hrs fuel + reserve)
76gal. and kick out the 2- 100lb dogs.
So now with lighter load. I hit 3,800' at the outer marker,
    800fps thru 4,000', 800fps thru 5,000' and 750fps to 10,000'.
gps ground speed 135kts. Welcome back to flight sim.

I must be the weight thing. FS2000 doesn't have an option to say how much weight is in the plane (other than fuel). It must use what the plane would weigh with full few tanks but no people on board. In FS2000, I can get better performance with full tanks than you did after you lightened it up. I guess that answers my question.

    Thanks.

Somebody needs to make that new Mooney Acclaim for FS. Max cruise 260 KTAS. Max range 1600 nm @ 200 KTAS (which is just a little under the top cruise speed of the Bravo).

  7. Default RE: Mooney Bravo in FSX

I just checked FSX. Default loading is for four people, two 170lb people in front and 2 100lb people in back, plus 33lb of cargo. I don't know what it is for FS2000 but it's probably just a pilot.

Correction on the Mooney Acclaim: Max cruise is 230 KTAS, and max range is 1535nm @ 180 KTAS.
