Thread: Split sound

  1. Default Split sound

Huh? Okay, this may sound weird but, I'd personally like to see the ability to split up the sound environment.

    Clarify:

The ability to either have full surround sound (4 speaker basic setup), straight stereo (2 speakers) or an, "inside/outside" kind of split. This would allow those with a 4 speaker system to map the exterior sounds to one set of speakers and the atc (headset) to another set. This would make it possible to crank the environment through speakers and use headphones for the atc, as real pilots do.

It would also make it easier to control volumes as you can simply vary the controls on your speaker amps/headphone volume. Everytime I change aircraft, I need to readjust the ratio of external:atc sound volumes.

I'd agree that it would be nice to have separate sound streams for ATC and for everything else. Obviously the system sound capabilities would still be a limitation, so it may take a second sound card to do so.

And either an engine sound or an ATC sound volume control that's not as awkward to use as the current set of sound volumes in the settings menu would also be nice.

And should voice chat for multiplayer become available, an individual volume control (and sound card selector) would be needed for that, as well.

You know, I don't think you'd need another sound card. All you need to do is preset the 3D sound locations of all sounds. Right now, if you're running 4 speakers and you turn the view, you can hear the sounds panning around all speakers. If you're on 2, it's just left and right panning. With this idea, you would simply map the ATC sounds to say, the rear left and right and the rest to front left and right. I'm surprised no one has come up with an addon that would adjust these parameters - but, maybe it's more complex in the coding.

Guys, it has been confirmed that FSX will ship with a full, 5.1 surround sound system. Also, it was reported and confirmed that ACES has a full time, professional sound engineer working on this system.

True enough, Bill. But that still doesn't say that there's a way to get ATC separated from the remaining sounds (or engine sounds separated, or...).

I remember hearing a while back that Vista will be able to steer separate audio channels. I was very interested in that because I often would like to watch a short clip using media player while my daughter is watching a DVD I have pumped into the TV. If I could separate those audio tracks, send one to the TV, the other to my headphones I'd be happy. Of course, FS would need to be set up to take advantage of this feature and be able to identify the audio tracks separately to be able to take advantage of this function. It hadn't really occured to me like this (although I think it's a good idea). I don't think it would be possible without FS separating the audio tracks. I would imagine it is meant for running more than one program at a time.

  9. Default Split sound on HP DV4 Laptop

Hey guys - I using MFS X for one of the first times tonight and I realized that the sim was splitting the audio automatically between the internal speakers and the external speakers hooked up via headphone port. I was shocked because I did not know that it was even possible. Any idea why? I have the IDT audio card which does not have any menu information about splitting audio.
