Default Shall i upgrade or not?

    Hi,
This might have been asked before so sorry in advance.
Just wondering if i should spend a couple of hundred pounds on upgrading my computer for FS2004 as my FS2004 has become very jumpy and i cant really have a good simming experience or should i just bare with it and buy a windows vista system for FSX when it comes out?

Personally I would wait at least until the first round of DX10-capable video cards are released, maybe this summer sometime. They main be few and expensie but at least you'll have that info to work with.

Ever since I heard FSX and Windows Vista was coming out around the same time, I made up my mind and am already planning on buying a brand new comp. I've upgraded my stuff for almost 7 years now, it's time to just start off with a brand new one. Hopefully there will be some good deals next fall, and some new hardware to accomadate the new software and games.

I am in the same situation also (what? you figured an FS add-on developer always has the best?).

I agree with tdragger's comment (dare I not?) ;-), and I will upgrade once I have FSX on my current system, and see what is what.

Let me add, my system is no dud either. It's a 2.8 ghz, 1gb RAM, but only has a 64mb video card. I already know that the video card will not handle it, and my motherboard is not up to the latest cards, so, a new machine will be in order.

I figure if my products run okay with some of the scenery sliders turned down, then all is well for many of my customers. This has proven itself over the years.

However, with little doubt, an upgrade will be in order for FSX but, again, you are best to wait, as I will.

First of all, when you say, "has become", I assume you mean that FS9 used to run Ok on your computer but it has been getting worse. If so, you might consider reformatting your hard drive and reinstalling your OS. At the very least, you might find reinstalling FS helps out a bit.

As for me, I'm saving up for a new computer now but I won't be buying it until well after FSX comes out (probably close to summer '07) for several reasons.

    1. any computer you get now will not be nearly as powerful as one you could get for the same price at the end of the year. Plus, FS never runs full tilt on computers available even at the time of release so why subject myself to at least two years of mediocre FS experience when a few months of suffering should help me get a much better system to last me through the rest of the development cycle.

    2. it gives me longer to save up and therefore a somewhat larger budget to play with.

    3. we don't yet have any idea how FSX works and therefore what it will need. For example, will it utilize DX10 or not and therefore prefer a GPU that can handle it? Will it take advantage of multiple threads so that having a dual-core system would help?

You should absolutely WAIT at this point before upgrading your system. Anything beyond applying additional RAM at this point would just be a waste of money.

Windows Vista and FSX are coming out later this year, and both Intel and AMD are releasing new dual and planned quad-core processor systems with new chipsets and everything.

Anything you buy in terms of hardware before Vista is out would become obsolete almost instantly. Wait till Vista's out, then invest in a kickass AMD dual-core system.

As much as I'd like to upgrade now, my system is 3 years old, I'm forced to wait until after VISTA and FSX is released.

Personaly I consider it a waste of money to do it now.

Even if it is very painful..
