How about having ATC give a hold upon approach to an airport or at least be able to program a holding pattern into a flight plan, that would be very cool and closer to as rel as it gets right?

Yeh. I agree. This is reality.
IAN
agreed, especially if weather at the destination is below landing minimums for FAR 121 traffic... they can hold for a while, then decide to go to an alternate.

last i looked, we never planed any holding a flight plan. If weather is at mins, they will issue hold instructions or vector you/slow us down or we end up going to our alternate. You dont plan a hold in your flight plan. But having the possibility of holds. right and left turns would be nice. Also some approaches use course reversals and dme/arcs. That would be nice if they were included as well when being vectored for an IAP.
They really should have an option to not hold for people who have problem holding. Even real life pilots have hard time with hold patterns after all. Besides, in real life its rarely used.
It's used more than you think...we are required to demonstrate a hold every six months. And they arent that hard if you really think about it.
I didn't mean demonstration of holding patterns for training. The actual use of it in IFR flights is very rare. This was according to Richard Collins of flying magazine just last month.
Remember there are a lot of IFR wannabes here, but not actual IFR rated pilots.
99% of the time if you just bring the power back you will more than likely get away with out holding but there are those times;) I understand that you didn't mean it from a training stand point. And we all know that Richard Collins is the end-all when it comes to IFR Flying...
Not to mention how negative he is (Richard Collins) in his articles. Man I get depressed reading most of his article.
Every IFR flight I have don e yet included a hold. Granted, I was doing IFR training, but still. They are a bit more common than you'd think. BTW, I'm no IFR wannabe. ;)
