Thread: Persistent online world

    Default Persistent online world

More and more folks are up on broad band. How about a persistent online world to fly in setup similar to the common MMORG. Career tracks extra. Look at the popularity of FSHost, i think something built in to FS would be pretty successfull.

The idea is great, but not sure how well this would work out unless they made a fictional world. As it is, I don't think there are enough simmers out there to fill the world as it stands. At least not to what we all would want to see that is. The world is much too large and we'd probably never really run into each other. I play Worlds of Warcraft as well and there are many places I go to hunt that I can go 3-4 hours without seeing another person. But again, I've been wrong in the past :)

I think something like this would be neat, with AI aircraft, not relying on the JUST real people to populate it.

This is the way I see it. The quality of scenery in MSFS is limited to the space on a few CDs, or even a DVD. A server at MS could have GIGABYTES of space dedicated to the scenery you see.

So, you buy the simulation, but the world you fly in has to be logged on to (we'll also have a "regular" version with the scenery on disc) and it'll be much more detailed and realistic than can be available on a home machine.

Now, as for the MMO part things would get tricky when you get into custom content. So you'd have "Single Player" which is just like you have now. Your skins, AI, and such populating the universe, but to go MMO you'd be restrained to default planes, or have people host their own servers were people can d/ld planes for use.

Would add a whole new dimension to the VA.

That wouldn't work due to the size of the scenery files. Imagine flying along from, say, LaGuardia to Ohare. Every 5-10 minutes you'd have to download an entire new texture set, new landclass, new weather, and lord know's what else. Unless you had fiber connected, you'd freeze for a good 3-4 minutes while it downloaded the scenery. You'll need most of that stuff on your machine, streaming it (ala video) isn't possible.
