Default C-310 Stability in the Landing Pattern

Anyone else have a lack of rudder authority in the C-310 when at approach speeds (around 125 and under) while in the pattern and dirty? I fly most of the other light twins with no problem (Shupe's Aero's, Rockwell Turbo Commander, default Baron etc.), but this is by FAR my most unstable aircraft under these conditions. Advise? Is it me or the bird?

LOL, I just flew 1.5 hours only to crash in strong winds in this bird. Tick me off :). Some alarm kept going off but everything seemed normal with gear down and locked and plenty of airspeed. I was all over the sky though and I think maybe I just tuched down a little too hard. Except for that darn alarm?? Oh well, its been a long day.

Anyway to answer your question, yes it is tougher than a lot of other aircraft. Funny thing is I flew this model 310 myself years ago for real and I do remember her being touchy but to be honest not to this extreme, but it was a long time ago. To be fair, the 310 is actually more difficult to fly than many other twins and if you just jump into her after flying a more stable platform, it is hairy. Thats why we get type rated. Keep practicing with her and it will be OK.

The big reason is because all of that heavy fuel out on the ends of the wing. If you're not extremely gentle on the controls you can get into an overcontrolling or PIO situation very quickly. This can be made even worse depending on your joystick/yoke setup and your sensitivity and null settings in FS. When I fly the 310, for my particular setup it works well to lower control sensitivities and just be easy on the controls. Really finesse it I guess :)

Bing!!! I don't suppose we have the option to drain from the tip tanks first. I can't rmember that far back when I was flying the real thing and I am in work so I can't look at the sim. ;)

On a happy unrelated note, I just checked the FAA registry website and my commercial license and IR are still valid after all these years :):):).

    Hi there

You can also increase the yaw stability in the aircraft.cfg file, located in the aircraft's folder, under flight tuning I believe.

A recommended setting is to increase to 3.0, and the reduce if you find that has over corrected.

I use the CH Pro yoke and pedals and I set the control sensitivity sliders in the sim to full right position, and with the yaw stability set to 2.1 it is still 'lively' but also feels better.

I go into the aircraft/fuel settings and reduce the tip tank load to 20% or so. Makes a world of difference in handling (even if not quite realistic).

Yeah I have noticed it is a bear to land...also very sensitive to steer on the ground too.....

This flight was made with the settings untampered with, just as installed:-

It seems to handle very well to me :-)

LOL, Peter, I have no issues doing loops in the aircraft, just landing it seems to be the problem ;). I tried the alternate air file but now she seems too slugish and heavy. I think I'l go back to the original and just be very very careful when I fly her.

    Well LouP,

If you looked at the end of that post, you will see that I landed on one engine with no problem...In fact that whole sequence was on one engine. I don't recall doing a loop though :-)
