Is there a way to get a downloaded tri-star to appear as AI traffic without having to get FS to use the Cessna slot. Do i need to replace the Cessna for the Tri-star, or can I just add on a new plane to my AI list?

YOu can do either. Replacing it will make the tristar fly ALL of the Cessna's current routes. Adding it, you can make the tristar fly more than the Cessna's current routes. BUT beware because most of the Cessna's fly VFR in small airports so the tristar will have trouble taking off.
