Will a 727 back up using reverse thrust... YES !! I was on a TWA 727 that backed out of the boarding gate at KSTL (St.Louis USA) using its thrust reversers...
So help me its the truth. Made an alful noise...

And the only problem with our 727 doing this is the lack of steering that FS has whilst reversing.

Ray and all,
Hey, use to do it all the time in Central and South America on those short jungle strips -- sometimes you'd barely get stopped before you parked the radar into the trees, so backing up was sort of mandatory, if you catch my drift, and most of these places didn't even have a tractor around, much less a tug to help you out.
Ahh, yea, those were the good old days . . . when I was much braver and not nearly as smart<G>. Don't ever volunteer for ANYTHING!
Best,
Clay
You can get by turning while doing a power back by very gingerly tapping the relative differential brake to swing the nose a bit...sloppy, and maybe a bit dangerous, but it works.

Yeah, works every time here too, a bit noisy but who cares?:D
Brgds

When I was a flight engineer on the "Jurassic Jet" at United Airlines, we commonly used power back at one of the small stations that did not have a tug. For the life of me, I can't remember where that was though. Geez. It was somewhere in North or South Dakota I think. I sure miss that airplane. At least I can fly the old girl on my pc! Thanks Dreamfleet! Dang, I don't wanna fly that stupid Airbus. "If it aint a Boeing, I aint going!" - Sledge
And it's still used now. I watched 2 MD80's backing away from the gate at Minneapollis <sp?> only last month, not to mention Champion 727's landing and taking off :-)
