And I've seen the effects first-hand. You can leave the mainland with a forecast for CAVOK and 3 hrs later as you're starting your descent they're reporting WX0F with a 40 Kt crosswind of blowing ice fog. Simply amazing, and not for the weak-hearted.

This time of year its usually different than the forecast;
earlier the wx was clear, relatively calm - NW winds 12 - 25 forecasted, by 3:30 pm snow was flying off the mountain tops and vis was diminishing in the blowing snow...
NWS issued the following bulletin:

Urgent - Winter Weather Bulletin National Weather Service Anchorage AK 500 PM AST Mon Dec 27 2004
0800- Kodiak Island- Including... Kodiak City
... High Wind Warning For Tonight And Tuesday Morning...
Northwest Wind Increasing To 40 To 55 Mph. Gusts To 75 Mph Through Channeled Terrain Midnight Through Noon Tuesday.

On Christmas eve a similar forecast was observed, in reality the gusts exceeded 100 kts in places... measured that is...
NWS only recorded 84 kts (I think)
(note; they're location is quite sheltered!)
