Well what we're really concerned with here is the ATR, I think it's a little off to try and compare single engined GA aircraft with a substantial turboprop like the ATR.

IMOHO I think that the manufacturer supplied data that Flight1 got supercedes pictures. But what the heck do I know lol :-)
ATR could be doing this project themselves and there would still be those who think it's wrong:)
:-lol
Todd, I just got off the phone with one of our engineering contacts, and I had him take a look at this thread. He was not sure what was funnier, the assertion that the ATR's wings flex, or that the Mooney's wing would flex, but in the opposite direction. He did agree with me that both logic and photos might lead one to believe that such straight wings do indeed flex, but alas, they do not.
There's 2 feet of dihedral built into the ATR's wing (the tip is 2 feet higher than the root). That's not flex, that's a permanent "bend".
He also agreed with me after reading some comments above, that it's not worth my while to try to educate folks that straight wings do not flex, whether they be on an ATR or a Mooney or a Piper. The wings are rock solid.
Otherwise, I'll just keep watching the "engineering" photos from airliners.net show up here as proof that both myself and this engineer are wrong. ;-)
Ah, yes, it's the Cardinal wing dihedral debate all over again! :-lol
Ya' gotta love it when folks just don't want believe you.
At one time I wouild have been insulted, but these days I just let it roll off my back.
However, I would say that it is a shame when folks do not want to be educated about such things, and instead want to assert their own theories. Afterall, airliners.net photos always know more than real pilots and aerospace engineers, right? ;-)

Hi Lou,
I do want to be educated like everyone else. Please tell us/myself why straight wings are perfectly rigid; I had been told otherwise.
Many Thanks,
Paul

Thanks, but we could have done without the rest. I need better glasses...
Well said Lou...Perhaps these ersatz 'engineers' will feel slighted enough to NOT PURCHASE the product. Moreover, maybe as non-customers, they would be compelled NOT TO POST in this forum....What a loss that would be...:-roll
Long live the "rigid" ATR!!
Tom.
ROFL Lou!!
After reading the first few posts here I was gonna say "Hey Lou, I can tell you even before the release that the ATR's wing dihedral is wrong - check this airliners.net photo!!! You better fix this now or you'll be losing loyal customers!!"
;) ;D

I have to agree with Lou, from what I've seen it seems that certain angles contribute to the illusion that the wing is flexing. This is compounded if the Photogropher is using a telescopic lens! I trust that Lou and the rest of Dreamfleet will do their usual well researched a desighned, work on the ATR. Especially since they are getting data directly from the Manufacturer. I think that in the end when the ATR is released, that everyone will see a product that will be one of the best (if not the best), Regional Props ever released. I myself am looking forward to it with great anticipation.
Just my two cents!
O.k., this wing looks like it's flexing but it's barely moving, actualy it's sitting still!

Here's another on taxi, looks like flex but there's no load on the wing! Interesting huh?

Was the person that made the statement "pictures never lie" being serious???
I guess the type of people that believe everything they see in a photograph on the net (including flexing ATR wings) probably bought this shot:

I bet Lou feels like that shark when these sort of topics come up!
