Some documentation I have suggests that when taking off in take off mode (FD on, A/T armed, TO/GA pressed FMC preflight complete) after 18 sec and above 1000 ft alt the MCP N1 button is available and when pressed illuminates and thrust mode is to go from thrust hold to FMC commanded N1 (in my case I pre-select CLB-2). No matter what I do I can't get the N1 to function, unless I select AP CMD A on, then as per design I get LVL CHG and thrust reduces to FMC N1 / RCLB.

Am I wrong in how this works or is there a bug?
