Thread: CD repair....help!

  1. Default CD repair....help!

Following my PC catching a nasty little virus I've ended up having to format C: Sadly, I can't get FS re-installed!!! It get about 82% of the way through (on to disk 3) and then chucks me out saying the error on the bloody CD :-(

The CD does have a very faint scratch mark near one edge (amazing as it's been out the package twice only!). I just wondered if there;s a way of doing anything other than cleaning it or giving Bill another £60 or so?

    All the best,

Theoretically, you could copy the CD directly into a spare drive and run it from there. I think I've heard of it being done.

Otherwise, do you have another CD drive - say a CDRW..? See if that works.

I'm pretty sure Microsoft will replace it for a modest handling fee. At least that's what I've heard, and anything else would be totally unfair. After all, most of the price you paid covers a license to use the software, not the physical media and a cardboard box.

I had an identical problem with my FS2002 CD1. Microsoft Canada kindly replaced it for free after I called them.

    Good luck Paul!

If the scratch isn't in the label, buff it out with some Brasso (available at hardware or DIY stores). To check if it's irreparable, hold it up to a light. If you can see through any scratches or nicks, it's most likely a lost cause.

    Paul,
I believe ic CD drive fault (bad error correction) than CD itself. It happens a lot - laser stream is incorrectly red by sensor. (I must have changed 2 drives due to this)

I had a similar problem with Age of Empires, another Microsoft program. It had a couple of small sraches and a little bit if 'junk' on it. Just cleaned it up a bit (can't remember what I used) and it installed fine. It's amazing how such a small scrtach or mark can effect the CD (especially DVDs :-eek )

If it were anyone else Paul I'd say "deal with it", BUT because it's you AND if you can determine which files are missing I'd be willing to email you the missing files.

Not sure how you're going to determine that but, like the Federal Government in this country, I'm here to help!

Thanks for all the suggestions, I borrowed a copy and it's installed OK.

Now the only problem is the CD that has the 727 project files on it is empty, no folders, no nothing. Toatally s**t**g myself I calmly try to read the CD again, nothing........oh f***!! The cat heads out the room as I grab the CD wit an old copy of the files on it........what!!!! Empty?

Bloody hell! I must make sure I actually write on these CD's, it's not good for your health having to go through them one at a time to find your work LOL!! :-)
