I didn't know where else to post this, but wanted to say something in public to remember my dear friend, Flavo Zeni, who I just learned passed away in Italy, after a bout with cancer.
Flavio was one of those rare breeds these days; a European trained northern Italian Maitre d'. I knew Flavio for over 25 years, as he worked at some of the finest restaurants in this area, the last 12 of which were at my "hang out" Villa Amalfi. There, we always had a wonderful time chatting with Flavio about all sorts of topics, while he took excellent care of us. He personally oversaw my wedding there in 1994, and countless dinners and parties I have been to. After so many years he had become more a member of our family than a "servant".
We were very saddened when Flavio became sick this spring, and later went back to Italy. I knew that when I saw him last, at his going away gathering, that it would be the last time I would see him. I was most honored that I was asked to say some words in public to him at that time.
Here is to a great a good man, a one-of-kind. I've met my share of fine maitre d'hotels over the years, but none could exude the warmth, charm, class, and the genuinely good heart that Flavio did.
Tanti saluti, Flavio! Now, reserve a table for me up there, I'll be needing it sooner or later; a nice one in the corner, eh? ;-)
My blessings to his sister and family.
Regards,
Lou
