Default Mach speed display can not read below .60

Hi, I have the Greatest Airlines: The 734-400 package for FS2002. Excellent product. I can not make my speed display go below mach .60/ 110kts. I tried the speed adjustment knob, and nothing. Everything else works fine. Is this a problem? I would like to set the mach speed to values below .60. Thanks for the help. Elso

I'm pretty sure that those are the minimum settings on the real thing, so I'm not sure why you'd want to go any lower than that.

Besides, below 110kts you're plane's probably not going to be flying for long anyway. Also, trying to do a Mach hold any lower than around .60 is just a bit unneccessary. The only time you'll be flying at less than Mach 0.60 should be on climb/descent, and in those cases you should be using IAS Hold anyway.

See ya in the pattern!

Actually, you should always use mach numbers above FL250-FL260 anyways. And at that point, if I recall, 250 kts IAS is about mach 0.65. In any plane that can go that high (standard operation), you probably don't want to be doing < 250 kts IAS anyways.

How many kt mach is depends on the air pressure in the athmosphere. You should use mach when you are above Transition Level. In the US i think TL is 18000 ft, in Europe it depends on each country's rules but this is set in the ATIS of each airport (online flying).
When a 737 has a cruise on mach .73 (long range cruise on .78), why do you wanna fly in mach .60?

Transition level has absolutely nothing to do with mach changeover.

EGLL has a transition altitude of 6000 ft...that'd make for ugly mach numbers...

LAST EDITED ON May-30-02 AT 01:25AM (EDT)[p]Actually, Mach number has minimal dependence on air pressure – it is most dependent on air temperature.
If you understand what the Mach number is then you can determine your own crossover point. Mach number is simply a ratio of your airspeed in relation to the speed of sound, and the speed of sound decreases as the temperature decreases. Temperature decreases at a fixed rate (normal lapse rate) up to about FL370 (after that it remains constant…to a point).

Next time you fly, take note that the Mach number will change during a climb or decent – even though you are keeping the IAS constant. Again, IAS is ram air pressure dependent and Mach is a mathematical ratio of IAS to the speed of sound (based on temperature).

I'm not going to give a straight answer on this one - I will let you figure it out. :)

Now that you know the above and know the speed limitations of your aircraft (you did refer to your POH and manuals right?), you can determine the cross over point of when to use Mach and when to use IAS.

Hint: Next time you are climbing to a FL with a constant IAS, note the Mach number changing. If you know you have a planned crusie or climb speed (based on performance) and it is provided to you in Mach - when do you switch over?

Good luck
See Ya,
Kathy
