Default REALITY CHECK - WHAT IS "REALITY?"

Hello all,

Below are four photos of four different Vertical Speed Indicators from four different aircraft (sorry about the last photo being a bit blurry).

By looking at them, what can you tell me about what each aircraft is "doing", based on the gauge readings?

Regards,

I would say your aircraft is trying to maintain level flight.

I'd say NO. You could be at the beginning or the end of a climb or descent, & would have to throw in "lag" time. But then I didn't spend a lot of time thinking about this either........... so if there's a catch...........

I don't think we can say much more than they are basically not gaining or losing altitude (assuming the gauge is functional). The aircraft could be inverted or in a stall for all we know.

About the only thing we know is the third one is a Cessna! :-)

LAST EDITED ON May-04-02 AT 11:18AM (EDT)[p]I belive all four of them are flying perfectly straight and level at constant altitude. Almost all VSIs I have encountered in light GA planes has been less than perfect.

My guess is they are all sitting on the ground not moving at all :-)

LAST EDITED ON May-04-02 AT 11:38AM (EDT)[p]Lou, base on that single instrument and lacking any other indications you can not make a determination. You could be flying, not flying(parked), climbing, straight & level, or even decending (even with the one showing a slight climb).
It's a good thing that the VSI is not a primary IFR instrument :)

Tom of course, and his BIG mouth cheated, as he knew darn well when I took those shots, and all those aircraft we on the ground.

Hakan, your answer was the most correct, as indeed the aircraft were neither climbing or descending.

Also, all aircraft were quite airworthy, and we flew one of them just before these shots were taken!

Now, can you imagine if we simulated instrument realism like this in our products? I can just see the "bug" reports now!! ;-)

Yes, it was sort of a trick question, but if you know me, you would know what the most likely answer would be, "the plane is doing nothing" ;-) Indeed, Hakan knows me, so he knew what to "zero" in on!
