Changing the Tab key to activate the FMC

I already use the 'Tab' key for another command in FS. Can I change it to make another key bring up the FMC window? I've spent a long time setting up all my key commands in FS to just how I like them, and it would really annoy me to have to change them to accomodate this.

Looking forward to getting stuck in to this great-looking plane, so any help would be appreciated.

I hard coded the TAB key to be the switching key for the FMC.

You will have to reassign the key in FS to somethig else

That's a bit slack don't you think. Every other add-on I've ever used for flightsim has re-assignable hotkeys.

I think it is rather arrogant of developers to assume that a key will be available and not make it assignable. After all, the default key assignments for FS are stupid (a classic example of adding new features with each version and keeping old keystrokes) so I (and I'm sure others) have reassigned everything to a much more logical and practical interface. Now you're telling me I have to mess this up just because you were too arrogant/slack/insert-appropriate-word-here to allow for this.

Sorry for bitching, it's a great product, but this is something you might want to bear in mind for future releases.

I saw nothing arrogant in what Tom said. There were reasons why he did it that way, and did not make it assignable, and that's all that need be said.

Besides, in reality, FS developers like us, and others, should have our heads examined for even including FMCs of that advanced type for just $29.95, Tom spent countless hours programming it over many months, and this is how you speak to him? I think you've become a bit spoiled, and perhaps are expecting too much.

Tom "broke his back" programming that FMC for FS2000, and then had to spend numerous hours again getting it into FS2002.

Show the man a little respect.

Or you could just press the fake FMC on the main panel to open and close it. That's just as easy as using a key command.

Uh-oh...I guess I'd better change my reverse view cycle before I get the DF737 then.

Actually, though no one cares, there's a bit of a story behind why I use tab instead of Shift-S.

It all began when I was using FS2K and had been searching around at fs.com and found what I guess is the precursor to S-combo. It was an adventure program. Well, I tried it, but my Shift-S key didn't work - I don't even know if it was because of the program, but I changed my cycle views backward to Tab, and it's been that way ever since.

Look, sorry okay, I didn't mean to ruffle any feathers. I was just expressing one disappointment in what is otherwise an excellent product, so please excuse me if I sounded a little overly frustrated.

I believe in good constructive communication between developers and end users so I thought I was just communmicating a minor quibble I had with my latest purchase (which, by the way, in New Zealand dollars is not as cheap as you think) as I do with most software I try out in the FS community. I have had many successful communications with other FS developers and I hope to keep this going now that I have taken the plunge with DF.

So, once again, I apologise. I guess my response was rather harsh but I think I was just reacting to what I felt was a "Sorry, your problem mate" blow-off response from Tom, rather than actually explaining why this had to be the case or taking the comment/suggestion on board. Now I realise that this probably wasn't the intention, but it easy to get the wrong tone from people in these forums, a limitation of the written word I suppose.

So Lou and Tom, no offence intended, and I hope we can let it go now. Cheers.

Actually, I have to admit I haven't actually got stuck into the 737 yet, I've been really busy at work, but I've got my whopping 200 page manual all printed out and rearing to go. I was just starting to make a go of it this weekend and the whole 'tab' key thing got me a bit annoyed. Just wonder if you might explain to me why it is that the key isn't assignable and whether this might be addressed in future. Thanks.
