    Default FS2002/TOD

    Hi,
Why the ATC in the fs2002 give me clearance to descent very before (about 40miles) from the TOD point of the FMC? In the real flies happens the same thing or this is a problem of the fs2002?

    Regards
    Paul

Because the AI ATC isn't perfect?

I have no real-world experience, but with online human ATC (VATSIM) they usually tell you something like "descend pilot's discretion to cross Providence VOR at 11000 at 250kts". Sometimes they will have you descend early, but usually not. Sometimes they don't say anything and I have to request permission to begin my descent as I near T/D.

Add to that that in real life you'd be on a published instrument approach (as the Dreamfleet FMC uses them) which ATC also follows. In FS2002 ATC does not follow STARs, it just provides you with vectors that put you at 2000 feet AGL and the runway heading about 10nm out.

in this situation i'm happy to use the "capture" function of DES page in FMC

IRL you wouldn't expect to follow your FMC calculated descend profile, unless you get the phase "descend to FL something at your own discression" from ATC. Of cause there is a point of FS2K2 not using SIDs and STARs, but my impression is that more often than not will you recieve radar vectors at major airports. Besides ATC might want a diferent profile for separation purposes...
Most controllers appreciate that your precalculated descend profile is the most economic, and will let you fly that if possible. After all, the flying business is all about money...
