It is best to use the landing light switches provided on the panel to extend/retract the landing lights and turn them on/off. This will ensure proper operation.
If you use the keyboard command of Ctrl-L to turn on all lights, the landing lights will extend, but not illuminate. You will then need to use the key command for turning on the landing lights to illuminate them.
Once extended using the keyboard, you will need to use the switches on the main panel to retract them.
On the real aircraft, this is a two part process: You extend the landing lights, then illuminate them, and this is best accomplished in the same manner as on the real aircraft, by using the switches provided on the panel.
