Opinions and a bit of help plz... (Capt Slarty?)

Even though I know this is not FS related, you folks opinions on this will help me make my final decision. I am at the point of getting a new local custom built system and have been reviewing components for several months. This includes review of Sharky's and Tom's hardware sites (plus others) and also scanning this and other forums. I am now down two systems, both very similar and almost the same price. I would love to get your opinions on just the few remaining components that I am on the fence with. If you do have an opinion on these I would very much appreciate them and your comments.

Hmmm, dificult questions. About the mobos, I don't know the Gygabyte board good enough, but the KT266A I know is good. About the Hard Drives, depend on the models, monitors, try getting the best CRT flatscreen you can afford (Diamond DF i best), and the CD Drives, no Idea.

Both boards are good...though I think that I would take the Gigabyte...

Both HDDs are good...it comes down to price (if that is an issue) or which name u prefer...

I prefer ViewSonic monitors (run the same model on mine), but again...it comes to price and name...

I would use the AOpen...I have heard good news about them and am thinking about replacing by burner with one...

Not sure how much my opinion is worth, but I thought I would help a fellow simmer

Thanks for your replys, very much appreciated. One of the builders provides a very nice network style case with 3 case fans, the other, your kind of run of the mill standard with 1 fan (he will install another though). Is case cooling still a big thing?

Happily running Maxtor 60GB 7200 RPM for about 6 months.

Case cooling is always a big thing. But I wouldn't go a ton extra for a big mother case. A mid tower Enlite with a 300 W PS, and an extra muffin fan sucking air in the front, should run you $60-$70.00 US and that, with proper fans on the vid and CPU, and neatly tied wire bundles so you don't block airflow, should do nicely. If you run a screamer HD at 10,000, you may want a fan on that also.

Well, I thought I settled on the Giga MOBO, but then an I.T. person at our firm stated that to update to any GF4 vid card in the future, that neither of these boards will work (voltages)? I have emailed the companies on this issue but have not heard back, anyone know if this is true??

Just built comp with Gigabye vtxh board with 512mb pc2100 ram and athlon 1700xp for my daughter and performance so far is excellent, built in realtek lan was recognised by xp and it went straight on to our home network without any problems. Built in soundblaster 4 channel sound is also a bonus. With Geforce 2mx 32mb gives a 3d2001 score of 1725 without any tweaking. Still using a 5400rpm ata 66 drive so changing that i expect would improve things further.
as foe geforce 4 card it will work in this board no problems i am assured by my supplier.

For all of these, they are so similar, I would just say go with whichever you can find for less $$$.
