I do not have experience with that yet, but know how you could do it.
If you use acryl then use plastic letters in mirrorwriting on the back side. Paintbrush the panel from the bacside and remove the plastic letters. Now paintbrush again in white on the backside. From the good side everything will be good visible and you can backlight it.

On alupanels you should use letters that you can rub on the surface of the metal.

I know these plastic letters in mirror do exist, but did not find them till now. So if anybody knows a place?

    Good luck

Or you can just use a printer and print on regular paper and put the paper under the acrylic panel, it will stick there when you tighten the switches and knobs. Might as well just put screws on the corners of the panel itself too.

For plywood panels that I did the trick doesnt obviously work, but for my current prototype I just used a laminating machine to put a plastic coating over the printed paper and cut it in shape, so it is on top of the plywood panel. Looks fairly okay:

this last trick looks great indeed.

so here's what i'll do for the overhead at least:

    1) try to get prints of a gray color that looks 99% the same as the color the overhead has right now

    2) print off those things on paper

    3) glue them onto the overhead

    4) .. does anyone know about a varnish-spray that ends up being not shining ?? Or would this varnish-spray color my paper ??

The press on lettering is called "dry transfer lettering" in the art world. It's made by a variety of companies in a great many fonts and colors. A web search turns up a great many on line suppliers. It's a good solution for small labeling needs. For larger, more complex projects it's hard to beat a PC and printer. You can buy full sheets of self adhesive paper at office supply stores, though it's a little expensive. Regular paper and double stick tape works as well.

I have been using Flecto Varathane Diamond Wood Finish for years. It is a non-yellowing varnish. Recently I used it to seal paper that I had printed instrument faces on, and it worked well. Varathane is available in gloss, semi-gloss and matte finishes.

What I did is take the image of the panel that I use in FS, enlarged it and printed it over 12 (!) pages. I then used wood glue to paste them into a wooden board. I did spray the board dark grey first so that any gaps would become less vivsible. It works good, but you have to be carefull when pasting the paper on the board becuase you don't want to get glue all over the place.
