Thread: My PPL Trainer

  1. Default My PPL Trainer

    Hi everybody,

    Just thought that you would like to share my happines... I am taking PPL at the moment and I´ve been building a Cessna look&Feel cockpit to support my course.

    I have used FSBUS (http://www.fsbus.de) for switches and rotaries. SUBERB! Functionality list:

    Switches:

    1. Parking Brakes
    2. Fuel Pump
    3. Instrument lights
    4. Avionics Master
    5. Landing Gear
    6. Pitot Heat
    7. NAV lights
    8. TAXI lights
    9. BCN lights
    10. Strobe lights
    11. LDG lights
    12. CarbHeating
    13. Flaps
    14. VOR/GPS
    15. AP MAster
    16. AP HDG
    17. AP NAV
    18. AP APR
    19. AP REV
    20. AP ALT

    Rotary:

    1. HDG
    2. CRS
    3. ALT
    4. BARO
    5. VSI
    6. ADF -radio(x3)
    7. ADF Radial
    8. XPNDR -radio (x4)
    9. NAVCOM 1 -radio (x2 + swap switches)
    10. COM1 -radio (x2 + swap switches)
    11. Trim

    Pot:

    1. Throttle
    2. Propps
    3. Mixture

    Radio display:

    1. 4x20 LCD display with Mr Jari Mikkilä´s software

    Okay, I know a bit more functionalities than you need to take PPL but as always projects like this runs out of your hand...:). I do also know that you can not compare cockpit flying and IRL but this is done for giving an understanding what it is all about... and for pleasure ofcourse... My cockpit has a better for pricing for me than a local flying club.;)

    I have used only 1 monitor solution in the first phase while I am saving money for LCD to replace the dummy gauges. It works and I am satisfied with this one at the moment.

    Well Alpha -version is ready and here is couple of pictures;

    I do have to give special thanks to my friends Tuomas Kuosmanen and Jari Mikkilä to get this point. Please get familiar with their projects at http://mikkila.remec.fi/fsbus/index_e.php

    Take care,

    That's some work you've put in there, but it leaves me with a couple of questions.

    Whats the iron for in the background of one of youre photos ?.
    is it for smoothing out iffy the landings.

    What do the scissors do ?. can't think of a witty comment for them.

    A serious question now. I've been looking at the FSBUS system and I am sort of in the early build stage, I know what the circuit looks like !. I am a bit confused with the switchs on the comm circuit, i.e. S1 & S2. Is S1 DPDT i.e one pole will create the 12volt flash path and the other pole will open circuit the base of Tr1. Is S2 a momentary switch, or a normal toggle switch (I've never seen that symbol before).

    Regarding the Flash voltage where does it come from ?. Circuit has a 9 volt supply, with a 5 volt and 12 volt regulators, how do you get 12+ volts out of 12 volt reg with only 9 volts in.

    Last one. How can I get hold of Tuomas Kuosmanen ?, I have got a design for a multi position flap switch he might like, or anybody come to think of it.

    One day I might have pics up here.

    Hi, lets start about switches.

    S1/S2 switch is for normal/program mode.
    - When S1 is open and S2 is closed, 5 volts will be on PIC's MCLR pin. This is normal operating mode.
    - When S1 is closed and S2 is open. PIC's MCLR pin will get approx 13.6 volts. And this enables programming mode on PIC. Another way told PIC enters to programming mode when voltage in MCLR pic is between 12 and 14 volts.

    I use simple jumpers as S1 and S2 switches. Power mus be off when changing from mode to another. Pic enters probramming mode on boot.

    Hope this helps about switches. Next powers.

    Original circuit eats 9 volts. 5 volts is regulated from this for every other use. Like TTL chips power and so on.

    I use normal PC-AT power as power supply. It gives 12 volts and this FSBus works just fine with it.

    555 timer with external components generates some 16-17 volts and 78L12 regulates this to 13.5-13.7 volts. Notice that led on 78L12 ground pin what brings out voltage from 12 volts to that 13.5-13.7 volts.

    About Tuomas. You can contact him trough FS Nordic discussion forum (www.fsnordic.net). I won't give his e-mail address in here.

    Btw. I would be intrested too about that flap leveler.

    Howdy :-)

    I guess one more forum is not going to hurt that bad.. Please post the stuff here if you can, it would be very interesting.

    I have some ideas about making a flap lever with "detents", I would use a simple rotary switch but just limit the movement from a full circle and mount it in a L-shaped piece of metal so it is sideways to the panel, and have the flap lever rotate the rotary something like 4 positions (0°, 10°, 20° and 30° of flaps) - the rotary switch has "detents" so it "clicks" to position anyway, and one can do a nice "stair-shaped" hole to the panel where the lever will move, like on a Cessna or other small aircraft usually have.

    Code:
            __
     rota- |  || ||
     ry    |  X|=||=
     swtch |__|| ||
        _______| ||
    ============ || ========== panel
                /  \
                |  | lever
                \__/

    FLAPS
     ____
    |    | 0
    |    |
     |   | 10
     |   |
      |  | 20
      |  |
       | | 30
       |_|
    Something like that :-)

    Hi

    If you can tell me how to get pics up here I'll gladly put the design up.

    Yeah, you can do it pretty easily. You click on the "Click here to upload your file" -link just above the textbox where you write your posting. It pops up a small window where you have Browse.. button for the file name, select your file and the file type (important! - it is likely JPEG or GIF image) - then click the "upload file" -button. Once the upload is complete, you get an URL for the file, you copy it to clipboard and paste it to the message somewhere, and it gets shown in the forum. Like below, an example image of my alternative "front panel" part of the console which lets me to fly a nice business jet should I get excited about "hairdryers" at some point.. :-)

    Or if you have a website somewhere, you can upload the image there too and include the URL to it here, it works just as well. Actually even better since I think this forum will delete the uploaded images after a while, so images on remote location will stay longer if you dont remove them yourself.

    Uh, this starts to sound confusing already.. :-)

    Yep. you cannot "buy" FSBUS. You can get the instructions (though they are in german currently, but will hopefully be translated to english too)

    You also need to know how to solder and assemble electronics, and also how to do your own PCboards for the fsbus modules.

    The good thing is that it is not very expensive, but the downside is that you need to know about electronics.
