LAST EDITED ON Jan-14-02 AT 09:08PM (EDT)[p]I want to know if I substitute a 100k linerer pot and switch it with a 2k will it make any differance?
The pot I want to use is a slider instead of a dial pot.

depends what you are doing, generally nope.
often, a rotary pot of, say, 100k in a joystick application will only use about 1/3 of its travel - say 30k.
if you put a linear pot in ints place, then how much travel are you going to use ??, maybe all. ?.. if so, you need a suitable pot for the travel, eg - a 47k would be fine, you may need a padding resistor at each end (1-10 k) depends.

Hi Capt'n Slarty,

What do you mean by a padding pot?

a padding resistor...

sometimes used to stop the voltage going to vcc or vdd... if you were using a 47k pot, you could put a 1k resistor at the ends so that there is always a current limiter.

in most js applications it wouldnt be needed, but worth noting.

I designed my entire control system using 20K slide pots as that is what was available at the surplus store. They work fine. I think 2K may be too low and will severely limit range of motion. Try it and see how it works.
