Thread: Am I missing something?

    Default Am I missing something?

All you dedicated X-Plane fans prove I must be missing something. I loaded it for the first time (demo version) the other day, and I was totally underwhelmed. What I saw when it finally loaded (took waaay too long) was a very blue-tinged runway with a jet on it. It took me a while to figure out how to configure my controls, but I got some action going there. However, my frame rates were about .5 - 1 fps. It was kinda like watching a slideshow, if you know what I mean.

    Here are my specs:
Athlon 900Mhz (classic slot-a, not thunderbird)
    256Mb SDRAM
    40Gb HD
ATI Rage Fury Pro 32Mb video
Windows 2000 Pro (I know, but I need this computer for programming, too)

My guess is that although the X-Plane site says it'll work with this ATI card, it's really holding me back. Everything else about my system should perform great as far as I can tell. FS2000 works like a dream, if you can believe that, using this setup. I know that the OpenGL vs. DX8 issues mean that the two require different hardware, too. But 1 fps? Anyone know what gives with this? I'd really like to add this to my list of sims, but it's been a depressing experience so far.

    thanks,

I'm using a raggedy old Compaq laptop with a 433 AMD and X-Plane
runs smoothly at 15 FPS. FS98 screams at 40 to 65 FPS and FS2000
limps along at 4 to 9 FPS. Go figure.

    Im running a PIII 800EB 256-133RAM, NVIDI 32 GeForce-2

I get 50fps on the runway, never lower then 25
    up too 100+ at altitude
extremely smooth, 32 bits very high resolution of scenery

I just took a look at my FS2000, was getting
8 fps over Manhattan full extreme scenery from outside view (higher if I stay in my boring cockpit) , usually 25 fps on the runway and FS2000 is so jerky when you switch to outside view,,,,I turned it off and may never return. I love X-plane.

These messages just prove that there's something extremely wrong with my setup! Can anyone spot the bullet that's bringing the whole thing to a (virtual) halt? My guess is that it's either the video card or the operating system.

And how about that blue-ish tinge to everything? The whole screen, whether viewing from the cockpit or spot-plane, is just very cyan colored, and not pleasing in the least to look at.

I'd really like to try this sim! Help!

I have had a similar problem with the 1 fps...(UNBELIEVABLY SLOW!!) anyway, you need to download the latest videocard drivers, and make sure hardware acceleration is on, and check your OpenGL settings.

TB900, 256MB RAM, KT7-raid, 20 MB HD, RADEON VIVO and I get extremly smooth performance. Your problem definitiely sounds video card driver related. Go to www.rage3d.com and look for new drivers for your card. Also delete all x-plane *.prf files to reset your x-plane set-up to default settings; easy to do this for any set-up problems.

Let ius know, yopur system should be rocking.

Hey there! I dont know if youre still having problems with x-plane, or even watching this forum or not, but I have almost an identical setup as yours........
    Athlon 850 (slot A non-tbird)
    256MB SDRAM
    Rage Fury Pro 32MB

......I get a very fluid simulation! The only thing that I could think of that would make your frame rate so low is that....
    1. X-Plane is not recognizing your card
    2. You dont have the latest drivers installed for that card

.....When I first downloaded the demo, I didnt know at the time that I had a 2MB video card...I was lied to on Ebay....Anyways, I went out and bought that Rage Fury Pro, and it worked awesome! Mine is an AGP card, and I set my AGP speed to 4x. Although I dont remember where it is, there is a box somewhere in X-Plane that tells you what card you are running the game on. Hope this helps!

Now that is encouraging news. I'm gonna go pick through the prefs right now and see if I can figure out how to tell X-Plane what card I've got. Thanks for the post!

Halleluiah!! I got the latest Rage Fury Pro drivers, and after a little dinking around (re-installing the card) everything is on the up-and-up. Now I'm actually seeing X-Plane perform properly!! First impressions: (not, repeat NOT trying to start a war here, to each their own) Compared to MSFS2000, shockingly fantastic frame rates and good flight modelling. Shockingly bad scenery, panels and general graphics. But then, people want different things out of a sim. I must say that I can see a place for this one!! Thanks for the help, everyone.
