Real Weather in 5.54

I've read the FAQ's and searched the forums for tips on getting Real Weather to work, and in spite of everything I've tried, I still get the "Real Weather Not Detected" message.
Here's my procedure: link to the METAR download site from x-plane.com, then right click on metar.rwx, choose "save target as," and save it as a text file named "world.rwx" in the x-plane system main folder.
Checking and unchecking the Real Weather box has no effect. I have a clean install of 5.54 on a P4 with 256K RAM,running
WIN ME, with a 32 MB nVidia GeForce2 MX AGP card. 5.54 runs beautifully, except for no Real Weather.
Thanks for any advice. Maybe 5.6X will solve the problem, and it's on order.

rename the file to Metar (without all capitals as in METAR).

I renamed the file to metar.rwx but real weather still is not detected. I saw in other messages that prior to V.5.60 the correct file name is world.rwk, but that didn't work either.

I found that if I'm flying in an area that isn't included in the METAR file, x-plane shows real weather as not being active. For example I took off from London with real weather working fine but halfway accross France I checked and noticed real weather was shown as not being active even though when I took off it was enabled. I've found that real weather works flawlessly when in the United States and Canada but some of Europe isn't included in the METAR file I download.
