You should be able to just install over your original Direct X with no problems.

Unfortunately, DirectX cannot be reliably uninstalled. If you are using Win98 and a reinstall doesn't fix the problem you have only two choices - either reformat and reinstall the OS (which includes DirectX) or try a third-party removal program (see DirectX Eradicator http://www.geocities.com/firecat182/ ). If you are using WinXP you can boot from the CD and try a "Repair" reinstall - but if that fails you'll probably have to reformat and fully reinstall XP (there is no standalone release of DirectX 8.1 for XP and I don't think DirectX Eradicator is XP certified).

Obvious point, but have you re-downloaded DirectX? Maybe your download/file copy was corrupted..?

Many times as I've reinstalled Win98, I sure question your assertion that it contains DirectX. Far as I know, it does not. I'm certain it doesn't include any DirectX version capable of running FS2K2.

DirectX has to be installed *after* Win98 is up and running.

No, it's installed as an integral part of the OS. That's why there is no uninstall procedure. I don't remember the default versions, but I think it's DX5 with the original Win98 and DX6 with Win98SE. I know XP shipped with DX8.1 and I think ME shipped with DX7. Next time you reinstall Win98 check DxDiag before you update anything - that'll tell you the version of DirectX installed with the OS. The only reason to install DirectX after the OS is installed is to update the default version.
