Default Squeezing the last drop out of the resource sponge

All,
My question is about how much of my system resources, if any, would I get back from deleting all my desktop icons and going to a plain generic wallpaper?

I have a pretty fast system already (Dell P4, 1.7G 256M RAM, GeForce 3 DDR w/64M). I don't use a screen saver and I have disabled Active Desktop. I use EndItAll and Rambooster as well.

My performance seems to be preety good, but I'm always looking for ways to squeeze the last bit of resource blood out of my system before starting FS. A bit of an obsession I admit, but it comes from the days from trying to get my old Cyrix P133 to run FS98. I used to have to make a circle of severed chicken heads around my computer just to squeeze out 7 FPS!

I'm joking of course. It was more like 5FPS.

Cheers!

It's NOT your desktop icons you need to worry about (or your wallpaper for that fact) - they take virtually NO resources.

It's anything running in your system tray (usually lower right hand corner. Programs such as Anti-virus, Task scheduler, Screen savers, etc. are the resource robbers. If necessary, turn them off while using FlightSim and then turn them back on when through.

Hi Silverblade,

Yeah, I turn all those off with EndItAll. I'm just looking for that last little bit. Maybe I'll quit obsessing if I get a Cray mainframe for Fathers Day.

LAST EDITED ON Feb-09-02 AT 04:15PM (EDT)[p]Desktop icons, take up absolutely no resources, as they relate to FS performance. A smaller file for your wallpaper image would free up a negligable amout of memory. There is no benefit of freeing up tiny extra amounts of memory, what you want to do is make sure there are the fewest number of extra processes running. I don't know about EndIt, but it seems to close down those proccesses. What OS are you running? With 98/Me, it's hard to tell about the state of your machine becuase it's not a very open and honest OS. Win 2k gives you a little more information and actually takes up less memory by default because you can tune the services offered by the OS. Try overclocking your system by a small amount for some improvement, if your system can handle it.

I don't claim to be an expert but actually you can kill processes in Windows ME, you just need to reboot after you do it. Go to'Programs' - 'Accessories' - 'System Tools' - 'Systems Information' and pull down 'Tools' then select 'System Configuration Utility'. Then select the 'Startup' tab. There you can select which "processes" you want to start up with. I know it's not ideal but it works for me and I can free up about 7mb of ram for simming.
