Great shots of a very unique bird. I've read that story of the Sunderland and the Ju-88s in an issue of "Aviation History", and its one of the best stories I've ever read! Hard to believe a giant like this was a maneuverable enough to outfly the -88s and survive! Amazing story!
    Keep it up! :-)

BTW, whats the name of the utility used to get that shot angle in #1? I remember its a program allowing different views of FS aircraft, but I forgot what it is. Thanks in advance! :-)

    Best regards,
    Vincent

Not a particularly manouverable plane, but defensively, it is "prickly".

I use Active Camera and get the shots like that, "walking" around the plane, manipulating the view direction and distance with the mouse.

Seems to me there is a freeware utility that has limited ability in this area, but I can't remember the name.

What can I say - this bird is beautiful! Never knew about it shooting down some Ju-88's - now that was one skilled pilot, and his crew and gunners as well !!:-eek

    Default Flying Porcupine

Must be something in the air (or water), what with all the flying boat posts. Seattle was the only water base that came to mind to start this flight.

During WWII, Canadians served as pilots and crews in No's 422 and 423 Squadrons of the RAF in Ireland, flying the Sunderland on anti-submarine patrol.

The nickname, flying porcupine, came from the array of machine gun armament; 2 50cal. and 8 or 12 .303's. As well, there was provision for 2000lbs of bombs or depth charges.

Able to hold its own in most conditions, a lone Sunderland, in 1943 over the Bay of Biscay, engaged and shot down eight Junkers 88 bombers. Hardly a gentle giant!

    Cheers
