This is Leg Nr.40 of my Trans America Rally. Te flight guided me from Cedar Rapids in Iowa in southeast direction over 510 nm or 945 km to Knoxville in Tennessee.

    Cedar Rapids City Information:

    Population: 120.758

Haven't found very much :-roll --> The city of Cedar Rapids was incorporated in 1856 and has since evolved into an economic, social and cultural center of eastern Iowa. Located on the Cedar River and surrounded by fertile farmland, Cedar Rapids is the second largest city in Iowa and the seat of Linn County. Downtown Cedar Rapids is a dynamic destination with many diverse arts and entertainment venues, including Theater Cedar Rapids, the History Center and the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art. The Science Station houses the McLeod/Busse IMAX Dome Theater. The Riverside Plaza at the GreatAmerica Building and the Red Cedar Riverway are great places to view the Cedar River and the downtown skyline. Municipal Island, a long, narrow strip of land in the main channel of the Red Cedar River, is home to city’s government center. The only other city in the world that has government offices on an island is Paris, France. More than 120.000 Cedar Rapids residents enjoy an outstanding quality of life enhanced by an abundance of sports and recreation activities, affordable housing and outstanding schools. Nearly 26.000 students are served by three school districts: Cedar Rapids Community, Linn Mar and Marion Independent. Cedar Rapids Community schools have received 24 Iowa First in the Nation in Education (FINE) awards and 10 U.S. Department of Education awards. More than 75 city parks and seven nearby state parks offer facilities for every type of recreational activity imaginable, including water sports, golf, picnic facilities, nature trails, baseball diamonds and tennis courts.

    Iowa State Information:

Land area: 55.869 square miles (144.701 km²)

    Population: 2.936.760

    Capital: Des Moines

    Nr. of Counties: 99

10 largest cities: Des Moines 198.682; Cedar Rapids 120.758; Davenport 98.359; Sioux City 85.013; Waterloo 68.747; Iowa City 62.220; Council Bluffs 58.268; Dubuque 57.686; Ames 50.731 and West Des Moines 46.403

    Governer: Tom Vilsack

The first Europeans to visit the area were the French explorers Jacques Marquette and Louis Joliet in 1673. The U.S. obtained control of the area in 1803 as part of the Louisiana Purchase, and during the first half of the 19th century, there was heavy fighting between white settlers and Indians. Lands were taken from the Indians after the Black Hawk War in 1832 and again in 1836 and 1837. When Iowa became a state in 1846, its capital was Iowa City; the more centrally located Des Moines became the new capital in 1857. At that time, the state's present boundaries were also drawn. Although Iowa produces a tenth of the nation's food supply, the value of Iowa's manufactured products is twice that of its agriculture. Major industries are food and associated products, non-electrical machinery, electrical equipment, printing and publishing, and fabricated products. Iowa stands in a class by itself as an agricultural state. Its farms sell over $10 billion worth of crops and livestock annually. Iowa leads the nation in all corn, soybean, and hog marketings, and comes in third in total livestock sales. Iowa's forests produce hardwood lumber, particularly walnut, and its mineral products include cement, limestone, sand, gravel, gypsum, and coal. Tourist attractions include the Herbert Hoover birthplace and library near West Branch; the Amana Colonies; Fort Dodge Historical Museum, Fort, and Stockade; the Iowa State Fair at Des Moines in August; and the Effigy Mounds National Monument, a prehistoric Indian burial site at Marquette.

    Knoxville City Information:

    Population: 173.890

Knoxville is the largest city in East Tennessee and ranks third largest in the state. It is located in a broad valley between the Cumberland Mountains to the northwest and the Great Smoky Mountains to the southeast. These two mountain ranges help provide a moderate climate, with an annual average temperature of 58° F (14,4°C). There are 99,4 square miles (257 km²) in the City of Knoxville and 526 square miles (1.362 km²) in all of Knox County. Downtown Knoxville is situated 936 ft (285 m) above sea level.

Present-day Knoxville is located near the center of the Great Valley of East Tennessee. Its location, in the heart of the valley and at the headwaters of the Tennessee River, make the city a center for the region's economy, culture, and history. Before European settlement, the valley was the hunting grounds of the Cherokee Indians. James White, the founder of Knoxville, established his home here in 1786 as a fort and cluster of cabins. By 1791, the community was renamed Knoxville and enjoyed status as capital of the Southwest Territory. By 1794, the town was home to Blount College, known today as the University of Tennessee. In the 1800s, Knoxville took advantage of its river access, railroad connections, and geographical location to become one of the leading distributing centers in the south. These same assets would make Knoxville a prize to be fought for during the American Civil War. Like the rest of the state, Knoxville was divided between the blue and the gray. After the war, Knoxville rebuilt its economy through commerce, industry, and natural resources that included lumber, coal, and marble. Those natural resources and river-generated power helped establish Knoxville as an important "New Deal" city in the early 20th century, as a gateway to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and as headquarters to the Tennessee Valley Authority. In 1982, Knoxville was host to a World's Fair and 11 million visitors. The theme, "Energy Turns the World," reflects the city's prominent role in technology. Today, Knoxville is home to pioneers in industry, leaders in the arts, and traditionalists working to preserve our heritage. Knoxville's culture and history can be explored and discovered in its 20 museums, numerous performing arts venues, and its historic neighborhoods.

    Tennessee State Information:

Land area: 41.217 square miles (106.752 km²)

    Population: 5.797.289

    Capital: Nashville

    Nr. of Counties: 95

    10 largest cities: Memphis 650.100; Nashville-Davidson(*) 569.891; Knoxville 173.890; Chattanooga 155.554; Clarksville 103.455; Murfreesboro 68.816; Jackson 59.643; Johnson City 55.469; Kingsport 44.905 and Franklin 41.842
(*) The city is part of a consolidated city-county government and is coextensive with Davidson County

    Governer: Phil Bredesen

First visited by the Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto in 1540, the Tennessee area would later be claimed by both France and England as a result of the 1670s and 1680s explorations of Jacques Marquette and Louis Joliet, Sieur de la Salle, and James Needham and Gabriel Arthur. Great Britain obtained the area after the French and Indian Wars in 1763. During 1784–1787, the settlers formed the “state” of Franklin, which was disbanded when the region was allowed to send representatives to the North Carolina legislature. In 1790 Congress organized the territory south of the Ohio River, and Tennessee joined the Union in 1796. Although Tennessee joined the Confederacy during the Civil War, there was much pro-Union sentiment in the state, which was the scene of extensive military action. The state is now predominantly industrial; the majority of its population lives in urban areas. Among the most important products are chemicals, textiles, apparel, electrical machinery, furniture, and leather goods. Other lines include food processing, lumber, primary metals, and metal products. The state ranks high in the production of marble, zinc, pyrite, and ball clay. Tennessee is a leading tobacco-producing state. Other farming income is derived from livestock and dairy products, as well as greenhouse and nursery products and cotton. With six other states, Tennessee shares the extensive federal reservoir developments on the Tennessee and Cumberland River systems. The Tennessee Valley Authority operates a number of dams and reservoirs in the state. Among the major points of interest are the Andrew Johnson National Historic Site at Greeneville, the American Museum of Atomic Energy at Oak Ridge, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the Hermitage (home of Andrew Jackson near Nashville), Rock City Gardens near Chattanooga, and three National Military Parks.

Flight report: Again a very challenging flight, especially the first minutes of the depature were not easy to go through. The weather in Cedar Rapids in late afternoon was better than the one in Little Rock two days ago, but still not really inviting --> 3 cloud-layers, thunderstorms and strong gusty winds up to 24 kts accompanied my turbulunces. :-eek Due to the nasty changing wind I was forced to abort the first take-off attempt because it would have been hard to hold the plane on the runway. The second attempt worked, but I hardly was able to hold runway-heading after lift-off. After the depature, the flight continued as normal. The route guided me over Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky and Tennessee to Knoxville, where I landed at Downtown Island Airport at 20:09 local time. The approach worked quite satisfactory. :)

NEWS: I want to continue this tour tomorrow. Upload the following days <-- Exact information about the next destination will follow later in one of my replies or can be found on my website ! ! !

Dwayne- "Please do not misinterpret me in this, as it is not meant in a bad way, but do you know how many legs are you going to fly on this tour? Thanks ..."
--> Why shall I misinterpret your/this question Dwayne. :-hmmm Normally I am a very sociable guy, so ask what ever you want. :-lol In the moment 144 legs are planned, but it could be that this will still rise a little bit. But I will try to keep it under 150 legs.
