Default Pacific Rim of FIRE Tour 2003/2004 (Leg Nr.36) - COMMENTS ALWAYS WELCOME

First of all I want to say sorry to all 56k modem-users. I know my tour-reports include lots of shots and are therefore horrible to load ! SORRY :-roll

    Hallo,

and welcome to Leg Nr.36 of my -Pacifc Rim of Fire Tour-. The last but one flight guided me from the Midway Islands in southwest direction over 1940 km or 1048 nm above the Pacific Ocean to the administrative capital of the Hawaiian Island Kauai, to Lihue. Kauai is situated about 180 km (97 nm) northeast of Honolulu. At 33 miles (53 km) long and 25 miles (40 km) wide , Kauai is the smallest and oldest of the four major Hawaiian Islands. However, that doesn't lessen its spectacular beauty or its irrepressible charm one bit! A true tropical paradise, Kauai is also the greenest of the Hawaiian Islands, a fact that has earned it the nickname "the Garden Isle." Kauai's 549 square miles (1422 km²) of surface area includes every type of environment you'd expect from any Hawaiian island, including but not limited to breathtaking mountains and valleys, tall waterfalls, 90+ miles (144 km) of coastline, dozens of miles of the best beaches in the world, astounding agricultural plantations, picture-perfect tropical waters seemingly optimized for the perfect snorkeling and SCUBA experiences...the list seems endless. Also worthy of note are two of Hawaii's most famous and spectacular features, Waimea Canyon and Fern Grotto. Described by Mark Twain as "the Grand Canyon of the Pacific," Waimea Canyon will astound you with its wild, colorful beauty. At more than seven million years old, Kauai is the oldest of the larger Hawaiian Islands. It started out as a seamount, a massive underwater mountain built up from a hot spot on the ocean floor. Over the eons, the volcanic activity continued until the roughly circular land that would become Kauai finally rose above the surface. Today, Kauai is a true tropical paradise, complete with the lush greenery and gentle climate we've come to expect of the South Pacific. From the seafloor to its highest point, Kauai is about three miles high. The highest point occurs at the top of Kawaikini Peak, some 5,240 feet (1637 m) above sea level; nearby Mount Waialeale, at 5,080 feet (1587 m), is nearly as tall. The northeastern slopes of Mount Waialeale are among the wettest in the world, :) :-eek receiving an amazing 450 inches (1143 cm) of rain per year. :-eek These constant showers have eroded a series of deep valleys into the slopes of the mountains, including the impressive Waimea Canyon, which measures nearly 10 miles (16 km) long and a half-mile (3 km) deep in places. :-eek :9 Prior to Captain James Cook's discovery of what he called the "Sandwich Islands," Hawaii was ruled by native Polynesians, who appear to have arrived from the Marquesas Islands (more than 2,000 miles or 3200 km away) by A.D. 800, and perhaps as early as A.D. 400. Sometime thereafter, the society was conquered or otherwise overcome by another culture, who ruled as a hereditary aristocracy called the ali'i. The Kauai Ali'i ruled the island from the Wailea Valley on the island's East Coast, a place where commoners were forbidden to tread. Although ali'i origins are unclear, evidence from Maui suggests the ali'i came from Tahiti, another Polynesian island chain. Kauai remained an independent kingdom, occupied mostly by a tribe called the Menehune, until 1810. It was then that the Big Island's Kamehameha I—after trying several times to conquer Kauai and failing each time—forced Kauai's King Kaumaulii to sign a treaty in which Kaumaulii could continue to rule the island, as long as he pledged fealty to Kamehameha. Kamehameha was never able to conquer Kauai militarily, as he did all the other islands. After Cook discovered Hawaii, Kauai was soon overwhelmed by foreigners seeking their destinies, ranging from missionaries and adventurers to whalers and traders. At first, the island served primarily as a wintering place for the British whaling fleet. Later, it become an important producer of tropical agricultural products, especially sugarcane and pineapples. Laborers from all over the world, including mainland Asia, the Philippines, and the European nations, came to Kauai to stay, making their own unique contributions to the island's rich cultural mix. Eventually, sugar companies based in the United States arranged to take over the Islands for their own purposes, overthrowing the monarchy in 1893. As the power of those companies waned, Hawaii was annexed by the United States and became a full-fledged American territory, valued primarily for its agricultural base and its military uses. Today, Kauai is home to about 55,000 residents, supported primarily by its thriving tourist industry ! :9 VERY INTERESTING FACTS ! :) I will include the information about the federal-state of Hawaii in the report of next (= last) leg ! :)

    ! I HOPE YOU WILL ENJOY !
