Default Flying online?...

Everyone,

Where can I go to fly online? I found the VATSIM sites but I couldnt find anything about how to get in an online flight. All I could find was about how to be a controller.

I have FS2002 and I have heard people talking about flying online so where do I go?

Thanks,
David R.

Hi David,
Are you talking about flying in MP ( Multi-Player ) mode online ? If so, you will need to find someone who hosts a session and log in. Off the top of my head, one I can think of is TheFlightCrew.com
Their link is www.theflightcrew.com

They are very friendly people and I'm sure would love to have you join them sometime on their sessions. There are a lot of others who host MP sessions as well and I'm sure they are all very good for the most part, but the one I mentioned is the only one that came to mind. Check it out if you're interested.

If MP was not what your question was about, sorry about that.

Hope this helped some :)

Best Regards,

Bob :-wave

LAST EDITED ON May-10-02 AT 10:51PM (EDT)[p]There's a thread in the FS2002 forum @ the moment, and it deals with VATISM. It doesn't give a lot of info, but you can check it out @ any rate. Thanks for the plug Bob! :D If you'd be interested in the MP, we'd be glad to have ya. There's no ATC in MP, so if you're lookin' to fly IFR with ATC communications, then VATISM's probably what you're lookin' for. Flying in MP is real easy to do.

I fly on line using Vatsim and also do ATC. If this is the way you want to go, you have to join Vatsim, then join a region. For example, I joined Vatsim and then joined Satpac, which is the Australian component (if you like) of Vatsim. One of the easiest ways is to join a Virtual Airline. They usually have all the details of what to do, where to go, what you need etc. As with all online flying and ATC activity (whether it be Vatsim, IVACO or MP)all the users are really friendly and eager to help each other out.

Flying on line using Vatsim system caters for ALL, whether it be GA or Virtual Airlines. When I talk about Virtual Airlines, I do so because the majority of users on Vatsim belong to one, but there are heaps of pilots who just fly GA. Not everyone likes the large jet aircraft but prefer the smaller pistion planes or the small jets or the helicopters.

To give an example, I am also (apart from being a Virtual Pilot) an Air Traffic Controller providing ATC for those flying on line. I direct all sorts of traffic, being the large jets from VA's, Military aircraft on training flights into various regional and major airports, general GA aircraft including helicopters.
I also fly for a Virtual Airline but enjoy the "freedom" of flying my Beech Baron 58 or the Bell 206 just for something different. Flying the smaller aircraft also allows me to see the local scenery and take in all the sites......something I can't do from FL370 in the B777.

So, yes it is for GA aircraft, not just the big boys and VA's.

Is there some special software you need in order to be a controller - sounds like that'd be interesting to try once just for the fun of it ? :-cool

Just a little inquisitive :)

yes there is Bob.

You need to download ProController. This is the 'radar' screen that allows you to see the aircraft in your particular control area.

To become an ATC, you must be a member of Vatsim, then join a region. You just can't jump on line and control. You have to go through the training stages.

The best way to do it is:

join Vatsim (get your ID and password), you then have a rating of Observer/pilot
log on procontroller as an Observer and watch the events as they happen. (this is where you will get to learn the basics of what is required of you and what you will be in for, lol)
If you decide that you would like to continue and become an ATC, then seek out a hub and join. They will guide you the rest of the way.

I don't know where you are situated but have a look at this link and have a look around and you will get some idea what i am talking about. http://bathursted.ccnb.nb.ca/vatcan/vatcan.html

Post a message on the forum asking for anyone in your area to help you become an ATC. There will be active ATC's that read these forums and quite possibly one from your area or close to you. eg "i am from New York and want to become an ATC. Can someone who is an ATC that lives in NY or near-by please email me and help me get started" something like that should do the trick.

hope this helps Bob......ATC is great fun. Hope to see you vectoring me one day.

regards,

lukki

this is a "little something" that has appeared on my ISP home page.........i think it says it all:

"Tell me and I'll forget. Show me, and I may not remember. Involve me, and I'll understand "

To me, this is what ATC and piloting is about.

Hi lukki,
Thanks a lot for the information ! I've been a simmer for a long time (since FS 5.0) and now that we have all this great stuff that earlier versions never even dreamed of having, I'm trying to broaden my horizons and start getting involved with some of these great features that FS now has to offer. I will be doing my first MP fly next week and am very excited about that. And this ATC sounds like another fun thing to try. It makes sense to have to be "trained" before just jumping in. Wouldn't want to cause any mid-air collisions or anything :)

I think that after I get the hang of MP flight, I may head over to Vatsim and check it out. I live in Kalamazoo, MI but have always considered my "hub" to be KORD. In fact I'm a VA pilot for Great Lakes Express based out of O'Hare and fly a lot of short to medium haul flights with them.
O'Hare would probably a pretty hoppin' area to control, but I've been using O'Hare as my hub ever since I started simming and know the airport & traffic patterns like the back of my hand. Even have all the ILS freq memorized as well as the VOR's and NDB's in the area. That would probably be the place I'd like to try & control someday. One thing at a time though, right :)

Thanks again for all the info ! I appreciate you taking the time to explain it all :D

See you around the forum, and maybe from the tower someday :)
