Thread: Cancellation of IFR flight without any warnings or announcements.

  1. Default Cancellation of IFR flight without any warnings or announcements.

It does happen when sometimes my IFR fight is cancelled without any warnings, or announcements. No obvious mistake made by me during the flight. Usually there is an option on the ATC window, whether to cancel IFR flight and I have not chosen it. Suddenly that option disappears from the small option list on the ATC window and then new options appear all of a sudden
    1. Choose airport option 2. Tune to ** center or something like that.

But nothing about the IFR flight and the option to cancel IFR has disappeared. So I know some how my IFR flight got cancelled, without any announcements from the ATC. I have not made any other mistakes in flight, for the ATC to cancel it and when it does ATC does tell so. I am not sure it happens when I rotate through various views. May be.

It is very annoying especially after spending a lot of time. It usually happens about within 50 to 60 miles of destination. So you can understand the frustration. Only thing left for me to end flight!

Does anyone know the remedy to it?

ATC will cancel your IFR if you do not respond to instructions.
For example..if you've been instructed to contact another center
frequency and you don't acknowledge (they usually give you
3 chances) or, they've told you to climb/descend to your assigned
altitude..if your plan calls for climbing to an altitude of
18000 feet or above, make sure when reaching 18000 you reset
your altimiter to 29.92..if you haven't, your altitude and
the altitude that ATC sees you at will be different and your
    plan can be cancelled..

Those are the only reasons I know of for a plan to be cancelled.

    Thanks Jim

I will take your advice and you may be right. But the cancellation was totally silent. No announcements what so ever. The only clue was the option to cancel IFR flight disappeared from the ATC window.

If you instantaneously change position, your IFR flight plan will autocancel. Other abrupt changes in settings can often result in an autocancellation.

The ATC screen sometimes can change very quickly, particularly in a high volume traffic environment. You can be concentrating on the panel/flying and reach over to hit 1 on the keyboard to confirm you've had a visual on traffic, for example, when the confirmation of a visual sighting will suddenly move down to 2 and another option, such as do you wish to cancel IFR, will occupy position 1. You've got to be very careful about this and I would suggest this is what happened. As I said, it seems to occur when near a busy airport at the appropriate time of day and things on the radio develop very quickly, much as in real life.

    Hope this helps.
