Thread: Landing 2 wheel A/C

  1. Default Landing 2 wheel A/C

Enjoying the new cub from FSD. But I don't really know how to properly land a 2-wheeled aircraft. I landed the cub and after a couple of bounces I settled down on the runway but in the replay I could see sparks coming off the tail. I think I put the tail down too soon.

Any ideas on properly landing these types of a/c??

OH - here's a pic of the virtual cockpit of the cub during a night landing...Pretty sweet!

It's your choice. A wheels landing with tailwheel in the air, or a 3-point, where all three wheels contact the ground at once. For a 3 point, you need to fly just above the runway until it's effectively stalled. The planes attitude, at the moment of touchdown will look the same as when sitting motionless. That's a view you memorize for landing. The wheels landing, enables better view of the runway. Just watch the brakes, as there is still enough speed left to nose it over. As speed bleeds off, you can keep increasing down elevator to hold the tail wheel off as long as possible.......... just for the heck of it.

cool, thanks. Yea, I'm having some trouble landing it smoothly. It's a really sweet plane though. Nice to fly just landing doesn't seem as intuitive as tricycle style landing gear.

Now go out & get IL-2 Sturmovik. Most fun I've had yet with tailwheel planes on a PC!

Actually, it's a 3-wheeled airplane. The third wheel is on the tail. Except in unusual conditions, you usually land a Cub in what is often referred to as a three-point attitude, where all three touch at the same time -- you've got to be slow and nose high before touchdown. As many tailwheel instructors will tell you, though, trying to get the tail wheel on first is just fine, and is preferable to getting the mains on first, unless you are going for a wheel landing, in which you touch in a roughly level attitude, then add just a touch of forward pressure to plant the mains, just about the time the mains touch of their own accord.

Tailwheels in FS are MUCH easier than they are in real life to land, taxi and take off. FS doesn't simulate ground handling at all well.

I found adding forward pressure on takeoff and on a wheel landing freaky. When you start out flying trikes, they always have you babying the nosewheel. Then your tailwheel instructor has you push the nose over! Hard to break the conditioning.
A nice three point landing on a good grass strip is almost sexual.

That's not the same panel as the FSD Cub that I have. What's the filename?
