  1. Your "not been able to run a single bgl software I downloaded" statement does suggest that you might be expecting to actually 'run' a .bgl file. A bgl file cannot be 'run' as it is the compiled "details" portion (the plan) of an AI traffic package and (as it is a type of scenery) must be simply placed in any active scenery folder. The default location is in the Scenery\World\Scenery folder. FSX will process the instructions inside and create AI traffic from the bgl and, if the flightplan uses default aircraft only, then the job is complete. If addition aircraft are included in the download they will be in aircraft folders and these should be placed into either the SimObjects\airplanes or \misc folder. If this does not help, my long-out-of-date experience with AI traffic will not suffice, so we will have to wait for someone with more recent experience than I. To help others assist you it is essential to give the name of the file(s) downloaded and from where did you download them. Please specify the last file you attempted to install and what the error message actually said. Surely someone out there has installed (or tried to) install the same flightplan(s) and can confirm either problems or a normal install on his system. Knowing if you're using FSX(disc) or FSX-SE may also be relevant. Best wishes for a quick solution Loyd
  2. Regarding airstrips with mixed-up elevations: these occur most often in "underdeveloped" countries; S America; Africa; Asia. These have very poor terrain resolution ; this means 'mountains' have rounded contours. This results in some ground elevations being too high or too low - airports being up on a plateau or down in hole in the ground. The FreemeshX freeware terrain mesh for the entire world will help resolve this issue in a lot of these locations. change in terrain.... BEFORE AFTER On a few cases I've moved the airfield elevation to a 'best fit' ( and probably never flew there again ). Papua New Guinea is another place of serious mountain vistas, but you'd never notice unless you replace the terrain mesh.
  3. A search for previous answers linked me to these posts: what is noteworthy is there are differing ways to actually place the necessary flightplans and ai aircraft. https://www.flightsim.com/vbfs/showthread.php?289805-Created-AIFP-AI-Flights-not-appearing&highlight=installing+flightplans+FSX one of the responses refers back to this one also see info here - especially response #3 https://www.flightsim.com/vbfs/showthread.php?282842-Where-do-AI-airplanes-go&p=1879640#post1879640 to summarize, flightplans are a form of (moving)"scenery". You can place them in any scenery folder that is active or create a new one and add it through the scenery library. The default flightplans are in FSX\scenery\world\scenery. As mentioned in the above links, the new flightplans MUST be in FSX format to also see default traffic. If you are using the default aircraft, no additional steps are needed - you should be able to see the new flights. If adding new AI aircraft, you can add them to the airplanes folder, the Misc folder or completely new ones that are referenced in FSX.cfg Making new folders is the procedure I follow so that I can enable/disable the flights at will without disturbing any of the default stuff. I use ai boat traffic also so boat traffic is handled the same way. Hope this helps Loyd
  4. I don't use FSUIPC to modify joystick controls but perhaps this will still help... I've only lost key bindings once in the past so I also keep a copy of the Standard.xml file to repair my bindings - actually several copies. The active Standard.xml file is found in the user's AppData folder here: ...\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\FSX\Controls\Standard.XML. I initially made a copy of the default configuration and also a copy with the changes I've made so I can copy-past back into the active copy (Standard.xml) In addition I wondered where the repair version came from that restored a damaged/lost file - found it here: FSX/Standard.xml. This is the 'default' bindings that are used to 'restore defaults' so what I did was 1) save a copy as insurance 2) overwrite the 'default' file (FSX\standard.xml)with my customized version from the appData folder so that: 3) if I somehow lose my active copy I just press the [Restore Defaults] button and everything is restored (including my changes). As a side note, I also don't have to shut down the sim to do a copy-paste operation to effect a repair. Side note #2 --- FSUIPC and key bindings... Reading the FSUIPC documentation years ago, I noticed some sim functions that caught my eye - GEAR_UP and GEAR_DOWN. These functions are not in the list of available bindings within the sim but they can be added manually to the standard.xml file: I use the left Windows + G keys as the trigger for Gear Down and right Windows + G keys for the Gear up function. Works like a champ! So no more Toggling gear up before landing because I thought mistakenly that the gear was still up. Gear Down means DOWN and only DOWN. My code additions VK_RWIN+G GEAR_UP VK_LWIN+G GEAR_DOWN You can optionally use other available keys/key combinations. To edit xml files, right-click and select 'EDIT'. If you select open you will just view the file without the ability to edit. Loyd
  5. Machynlleth: a labor of LOVE... [1] I do not have or use Chaseplane; instead I used the technique common to FSRecorder the flight recordings were made using JoinFS software's recording feature a) I flew and saved a 'record' of the first (front) aircraft b) I replayed the front a/c recording while recording the following A/C and the front one together. c) Then played back the pair while 'filming' the pair with OBS and managing the cameras. Aircraft: opening - two Tornados, F15's from Lakenheath, Harriers, A-400, Eurofighters, a second set with exits; finale is the A-400 flying in front of the Harriers. [2]FreeMeshX, Orbx Base and Trees. Nearest airport EGOD (Llanbedr) in Wales [3] I believe all cameras (6 or 7) were scenery cameras in 'track' mode Image showing EGOD and camera locations on Plan-G map. regards Loyd
  6. I love FSX cameras I love camera questions... FSX has a built-in Tower or you can make your own or you can buy software to help you 1. does FSX limit the number... Not to my knowledge but, if so, it would like 128, 512, or 1024 - that powers-of-two thing that compters love It really doesn't matter as you will see shortly. 2. could you create new tower views. Yes, easily and movable if you'd like. 3. is there a utility for making this stuff? Yes. It's a full-featured utility and payware: Chaseplane. Can you do the basice stuff you asked about for free inside FSX? YES You can make the tower view completely movable, and you can take control of the viewing direction and pan around. There is also a camera called a scenery camera; they didn't make any default ones so you don't see them in action but they are easy to make. If I can be forgiven for shamelessly promoting a couple of my own FSX videos, you can see the power of scenery cameras in these two videos: Machynlleth: and a flight in Zion National Park You can place a scenery camera anywhere by simply adjusting the Lat/Lon and elevation (in meters) to suit your needs. There are 5 or 6 scenery cameras placed along the route in these videos to follow the aircraft exactly like a flyby camera except that they don't move. -by this I mean they are locked to my aircraft here but that they could have been free to pan. A scenery camera definition can be added manually to either an aircraft.cfg or a flightplan. If I want a particular location frequently I'd place the camera in a flightplan. If I want to change camera location as I fly I'd place the camera in an Aircraft.cfg and change it as I fly about. This is what one of my panning scenery camera definitions looks like: //===================== Scenery camera =================== // Fixed location camera at EGQK Kinloss, Scotland [CameraDefinition.004] Title = Fixed Camera 1 Guid = {835BFC1C-1A03-994A-A176-49318FEB094E} // a unique GUID (unique in a single config file) Description = Fixed location EGQK Origin = Fixed InstancedBased = No Category = scenery Track = None // use this to pan around freely with joystick tophat or 'mouse look' //Track = Track // use this to lock onto user aircraft SnapPbhAdjust = None PanPbhAdjust = Swivel PanPbhReturn = False PitchPanRate=30 // your choice (degrees per sec) HeadingPanRate=45 // your choice (degrees per sec) PanAcceleratorTime=0 AllowZoom = Yes InitialZoom = 2.0 ZoomPanScalar = 1.0 SmoothZoomTime = 0 XyzAdjust = TRUE // you can move the camera using 'virtual cockpit' camera controls XyzRate = 50 // meters/second movement (adjustable) Transition = Yes FixedLatitude=N57.640150 FixedLongitude=W3.550868 FixedAltitude=100 // meters InitialPbh=0.0, 0, 315 ShowLensFlare=FALSE ShowAxis = No ShowWeather = Yes explanations Guid = {835BFC1C-1A03-994A-A176-49318FEB094E} a GUID: camera id number that is unique in a single config file a guid number can be created online at https://www.guidgenerator.com/online-guid-generator.aspx (tick on Uppercase, braces, hyphens) Track= option "none"allows free panning for AI or 'track' to lock on to your aircraft pan speeds controls are adjusted to your taste Fixed coordinates determine camera position XYZrate and XYZadjust control movement permission and speed -- 50m/sec is relatively fast Initial Pbh is pitch, bank, and heading orientation. 315 in this case is the direction to the fuel station where I was parked but you can point it anywhere. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- On the other hand If you want to watch from inside an FSX tower ------------------------------------------------------------------------- the procedure below creates an internal tower view that you control just like a cockpit 3d camera and positioned at the airport's defined tower location. from the menu on the left - go to Multiplayer Select Local Network ( you can leave the 'player' as it is ) click [sign In] select "Host a session" (on bottom right) no changes to next page, just click NEXT -see a window that looks like the 'create a flight' window choose session: select air traffic controller select airport (EGQK as example), weather and time (your 'aircraft' is the tower) ** MAGIC: if you want to SAVE this location, save it NOW with the (save) button. click NEXT click NEXT you should be in the Briefing Room at this point click [FLY NOW]. see self at selected airport inside tower. -pan around/move around (this is your 3D cockit) -your shift + number keys (1-6)give you radios and radar and other utilities If you saved this "flight" it will be available same as a regular flight; you can save multiple locations or multiple versions of the same site at differing times of day. enjoy Loyd
  7. GSX I don't know, but we can certainly talk Scenery. 1. scenery CAN be installed in the addon scenery folder inside FSX 2. scenery CAN also be anywhere on the machine you want to put it - and the simpler the location, the better. here are some entries from my FSX-SE... [Area.120] Title=Addon Scenery Local=Addon Scenery Layer=131 Active=TRUE Required=FALSE [Area.121] Title=FreeMeshX - Africa Local=S:\FreeMesh\FreeMeshX - Africa Active=TRUE Required=FALSE Layer=104 [Area.128] Title=BONN Local=S:\Addon Scenery\BONN Active=TRUE Required=FALSE Layer=132 [Area.132] Title=addonTrafficMil Local=S:\Addon Scenery\addonTrafficMil Active=TRUE Required=FALSE Layer=127 [Area.134] Title=Bluesky_WA Local=K:\Photoscenery\Bluesky_WA Active=TRUE Required=FALSE Layer=134 [Area.135] Title=Bluesky_SoCal Local=K:\Photoscenery\Bluesky_SoCal Active=TRUE Required=FALSE Layer=135 The simplest method I think is to create a Addon_Scenery folder on the C:\ drive and put all sceneries there manually. A) it's easiest to find. B) it's easiest to add to the Scenery Library. C) it's easiest to remove if it doesn't work for you. create an addon folder and place the individual airports in labeled folders inside thusly: C:\ Addon_Scenery . CYVR .. scenery (scenery .bgl's go here) .. texture (textures go here if needed) . KMIA .. scenery .. texture etc If you have an installer that is capable of installing inside steam and FSX, use it if you want but I'd make some 'before' and 'after' screenshots to make sure that the scenery is actually installed and working correctly. I typically install to a dummy folder and move the files to my chosen location manually. No 'hunting' required. I keep my sceneries outside of FSX because most are shared by FSX, FSX-SE, P3d v2, and P3d v3. Most sceneries, you will note, are NOT inside a folder inside of any sim; no duplication except with Orbx sceneries. I use several different drives because of space considerations and I also use Win7 and Win10 so sharing sceneries saves a lot of space on both OS drives. I hope this helps Loyd
  8. Muted is correct. P3d has muted sound as an option, but you're stuck with it in FSX.
  9. you may be confusing CONFIRM ON EXIT with PAUSE ON TASK SWITCH. You can confirm that the "pause" setting is NOT CHECKED in "Settings/General" but also confirm the setting is actually set in the fsx.cfg file as [user interface] PAUSE_ON_LOST_FOCUS=0 I say this because, as best I know, FSX writes to the config file as the sim is shutting down properly - if you shut down with CONTROL + BREAK, the config file will not be updated and any changes will be lost. If your config file is not being updated, then you would have to change it manually. Hope this helps Loyd
  10. go to fsdeveloper website and follow the instructions to get appropriate SDK installed and then you will have the compiler available. Loyd https://www.fsdeveloper.com/wiki/index.php?title=SDK_Installation_(FSX)
  11. One last thought: sometimes you need to enclose a path that has a space in it with double quotes ("ADDON AIRCRAFT") OR tie the two words together like I did: addon_aircraft. that's the only idea I have left. Loyd
  12. My steam fsx is on another OS (win10) I checked and it also references the S drive and all my extra aircraft. here is the assignments from FSX-se [Main] User Objects=Airplane, Helicopter SimObjectPaths.0=SimObjects\Airplanes SimObjectPaths.1=SimObjects\Rotorcraft SimObjectPaths.2=SimObjects\GroundVehicles SimObjectPaths.3=SimObjects\Boats SimObjectPaths.4=SimObjects\Animals SimObjectPaths.5=SimObjects\Misc SimObjectPaths.6=SimObjects\AI_Objects SimObjectPaths.7=S:\Addon_Aircraft There doesn't seem to be any specific issues with Steam Edition finding extra folders, since I have an added folder (ai_objects) and a remote addon_Aircraft folder that work ok. You might try a simple remote addon-aircraft folder on the B drive such as B:\AddonPlanes with a single airplane in it and add it to the config and see if the sim can see it. If not, I'm out of ideas. Loyd
  13. fsdeveloper only suggest the default may be used; personally, I have FSX and SDK beside each other on a non-OS drive. I suspect it doesn't matter where you put it; it needn't be inside of FSX folder. Loyd
  14. 2020: if or when... I have a 500 GB Win10 drive with games and insufficient room for 2020. I am keeping FSX and P3d indefinitely... why? several hundred addon aircraft that 2020 will likely never have. My choice. I can also fly multiplayer with the guys in 2020 and keep what I have. I will be going with a new 500GB SSD solely for 2020 and a second drive to provide a clone for the 2020 in case of drive failure. This extra cost is the price of peace of mind; even if it costs more than the sim itself. my win7 is cloned, my win10 is cloned and so will 2020 be equally protected. Yes, I did lose a 500GB drive last year, but I had gotten the warranty so I recovered most of the cost of a new one. Loyd
  15. each/a sim can reference aircraft anywhere but you MUST use a complete pathname to anything not in the same install: that SimObjects\Addonplanes refers ONLY to addonplanes folder in the same sim. I use a common support drive that provides scenery and aircraft for 2 versions of FSX and two versions of P3d. This is what my config entries look like. User Objects=Airplane, Helicopter SimObjectPaths.0=SimObjects\Airplanes SimObjectPaths.1=SimObjects\Rotorcraft SimObjectPaths.2=SimObjects\GroundVehicles SimObjectPaths.3=SimObjects\Boats SimObjectPaths.4=SimObjects\Animals SimObjectPaths.5=SimObjects\Misc SimObjectPaths.6=SimObjects\AI_aircraft-boats SimObjectPaths.7=S:\Addon_Aircraft I've added a folder for AI stuff in Sim Objects but all flyable add-on aircraft are on a separate drive but note the complete path to the other drive. Try that and see how it works. You can't use the simple SimObjects\airplanes for a differently located sim; full path only. Something like B:\Steam\steamapps\common\flight simulator X\simobjects\AddonPlanes or however your own path actually reads. As you can see from my cfg file, the addons do not have to be in the simobject folder, they can be in a simple addon folder outside of FSX as well as inside the sim. hope this helps Loyd
