I'm considering trying out P3D. The main annoyance for me with FSX is the way autogen pop up in the scenery in batches -- it ain't subtle at all and breaks the sense of realism. Phil Taylor, of the FSX programming team, commented in a post on his blog around the time that SP1 was being released:
The vastly improved batching of Autogen was one of the major performance items in SP1 and helps to reach our target reduction of 35-40% for Draw and SetTexure calls. However, it does have an implication that, when coupled with a feature we lost from FS9, you should be aware of.

FSX does not “alpha-fade” Autogen in the distance. This makes for a discernable “pop” of Autogen objects. SP1 batches objects in a 2 km boundary. This, when coupled with the lack of “alpha-fade”; does make the Autogen “pop” a little more obvious than in RTM. We think it’s a fair tradeoff, though, for the performance gain.

For DX10 we will look at bringing the “alpha-fade” back.

Hello all.

I’m Jeff Van West, and I’m working with Redbird Flight Simulations to create content for their simulators, especially the new Jay. You can find out more about Redbird and the Jay here:

http://www.flightsim.com/vbfs/conten...un-2013/view/6
http://aopalive.aopa.org/?watch={923...-0664522A5E78}
http://aopastore.3dcartstores.com/Th...bird_p_29.html

Dan indicated there was interest on this forum about developing missions for the Jay (we’re calling them “scenarios” for semantic reasons). That’s definitely a possibility, so I put together the following. It’s also available as a word doc via the link to documents further down this post.

We’re a small team, so we’re not actively seeking lots of third-party missions right now because we’d be quickly overwhelmed. But I thought I’d start this thread to start a discussion and answer questions. We’ll be doing an interview with Flightsim.com soon to talk about the various Redbird projects and Prepar3D.

Best,
Jeff

Creating Scenarios for the Jay by Redbird
Thanks for your interest in creating scenarios—a.k.a. missions—for the Jay. Here’s a bit of background information, and some technical items so you know what’s involved.
The Device and its Audience

The Jay is an all-in-one simulator made by Redbird Flight Simulations and sold by the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA). This video and the Jay sales page give a good overview of the product.

Most scenarios for the Jay are built by Redbird Media in conjunction with aviation-industry partners (AOPA, Flying magazine, King Schools, PilotWorkshops, NAFI, The American Bonanza Society). These will be available on the MyJay website for Jay owners to download, purchase or subscribe to depending on the scenario. In addition, the MyJay site is a place where aircraft models, scenery, add-ons and even hardware could be made available to Jay users. Third-party scenarios would be offered here for free or for sale.

That said, reviewing third-party scenarios for potential inclusion on the Jay would be on a workload-permitting basis.

Tech and Tools
The Jay runs Lockheed P3D (currently v 1.4), and scenarios use the basic mission engine. All Jays have Jim Kier’s SimVar running, making all those commands available for scenarios as well. The scenarios are launched through a custom UI that, in turn, launches P3D. That means custom Standard.xml, UI.xml, and Prepar3D.cfg files can be placed before mission launch. We can place custom scenery or aircraft files to run only with a mission if you wish to add files this way rather than calling them directly from the mission’s xml.

Redbird also has custom add-ons for scoring and leader-board functions, and is continuing to develop relationships with third-party vendors to enrich Jay missions. Some of these may be available to third-party mission builders.

Guidelines for Submitting Jay Scenarios
Jay scenarios are aimed at real-world pilot and simulation enthusiasts seeking real-world experiences. So realistic flight challenges, training situations, competitions and other realistic, immersive experiences are good candidates for Jay scenarios.

We’re open to hearing almost any pitch for a scenario you’d like to see available to Jay users. A simple email to scenarios@redbirdflight.com outlining what you propose is a fine place to start.

Our process for creating scenarios starts with a scenario design document (SDD) and our mission-building checklist. These are the basis for our scripts and building out the logic for scenarios. We have a simplified version of the SDD we’d like you to complete, both to ensure we understand your scenario concept and to help you ensure all the required elements are in place.

The Jay scenarios are essentially the same as native P3D and FSX mission, but there are a few additional features you might want to use, such as briefing windows that come up post-flight. There’s also a simplified version of our Mission Creation Checklist showing the additional elements you’ll need to have in place before submitting the scenario. The SDD, Mission Creation Checklist, and an example of an uncompiled Jay scenario are all available here. (Note that the postflight files for this scenario were just placeholders. They are optional; if the are omitted, ending the scenario returns directly to the main UI.)

If your pitch, or complete SDD, looks good, we’ll give a green light to send us the files for review and testing on the Jay. You’ll be expected to fix any bugs. Then it goes out on the MyJay site for Jay owners to download. If further bug reports come in, you’ll be expected to fix those as well. We can push corrected files out to all Jays in the field.

Again, this is all on a workload-permitting basis. If there’s a big demand for vetting third-party scenarios, we’ll probably create some kind of peer review to speed things up.

Not Quite an FAQ
The Jay is too new to have any questions count as frequent. But here are some questions we expect you have and their answers:

Are you releasing Jay scenarios to non-Jay owners to fly on their own home sims?
Not for the foreseeable future. Obviously, Redbird wants to sell Jays and scenarios are a selling point for the device. But there’s another reason: Because we run multiple custom add-ons, replace configuration files and install temporary objects, supporting these scenarios for more than one known hardware configuration—hardware we can update directly—just isn’t feasible at this time.

OK, can I offer my scenarios I build for the Jay non-Jay users?
Absolutely. Offering your scenarios on the Jay is non-exclusive if you prefer it that way. You own the IP for your work.

Are there any special requirements for the files beyond what I’d do for P3D or FSX?
Yes. We have different HTML for the briefings (with more capability than the P3D/FSX standard), the option for post-flight briefings, a procedure for custom scenery and other objects, and required extra fields in the FLT file. See the Mission Building Checklist and the example mission for details.

Every Jay scenario is assigned to a publisher. So for your first scenario, we must add you as a publisher for all Jays.

How will payment work if I want to sell my scenarios?
Right now, it won’t. We don’t have a mechanism in place for this. But once we do, paid scenarios get negotiated with the publisher (you) on a case-by-case basis.

How many Jays are out there, anyway?
As of this writing, the Jay population is small, but growing steadily. Some products in the works at Redbird will likely boost that growth rate significantly.

Hey, you missed the obvious question I had, which is …
Like we said, this is a new product and we’re still figuring out the details. Send your question to scenarios@redbirdflight.com.

Lockheed Martin put P3D on the market with a restricted licence.

Certain forums foamed at the mouth about potential breaches of licence and created a very negative atmosphere.

In some forums and flightshops even X-Plane is given a better run than P3D.

So I am curious just what has the uptake of P3D been. It is the genuine successor to FSX but I am concerned that in the light of the various treatment by the industry and forums, it may be sub-economic.

Does anyone have any idea of its market success or otherwise?

Many of you most likely have received this notice via email. If you don't know, you need to replace your current version of FSUIPC. I pasted the pertinent message from my email below:

Full Press Release text:

FSUIPC will need replacing on all user systems!

For the last ten years FSUIPC has been protected against both unwanted alteration and virus infection by the use of a Code Signature, purchased from and protected by GlobalSign, an officially recognised Windows Certificate Authority.

It has come to my attention that within the last two weeks the same Code Signature has been used to sign malicious software, apparently in the form of Java updates, to make it look valid and safe. Whilst the FSUIPC packages themselves are not affected in any way by these, it does mean that we have had to ask GlobalSign to revoke the signature. This in turn will cause the signature to appear incorrect, and because FSUIPC actively checks it every time it is started the end result is that all versions of FSUIPC3 and FSUIPC4 before today’s date will cease to function.

After due consideration it has been decided that we will dispense with Code Signing henceforth, and over the next few days unsigned versions of all of my programs will be released, replacing the signed versions and with incremented version numbers, but with no other changes.

Because only FSUIPC has the Signature self-checking built in, it is the main priority, and versions 4.90 and 3.999z2 have been released today free of this check. All users will need to update for continued use of the program, and software producers who include FSUIPC in their packages are asked to update those as soon as is convenient and practical.

Apologies to all for this unprecedented event. We still don’t know how the break in the signature’s security occurred but we will be following this up with GlobalSign.

Best Regards
Pete

This isn't a new "issue", but I just keep forgetting to ask about it, as it doesn't really affect my P3D experience. When I want to capture screenshots of, say, a landing, I am unable to pan around my aircraft during a replay. I can zoom in and out, though. Anyone else experiencing this? I use FSUIPC to assign actions, including panning, to my joystick buttons. I don't know if that has anything to do with it or not (but I never had that problem in FS9).

So, I'm very eager to try this aircraft with all the reviews I am reading, however I realize the new Majestic Dash 8 is for FSX only. The developer has mentioned in numerous places that they intend to release a P3D version. Through personal email exchanges with one of the team members, that was confirmed to me, although I was also told they are waiting for the next version of P3D for their release. I asked why wait for the next version, and the reply was they had heard mixed reviews about people's experiences with P3D (performance-wise).

I also read, in another sim forum, a comment by the developer that they are fine with people using their aircraft in P3D if they can get it to work (they just never tested it in P3D). Some have reported to have it working just fine, but apparently in 'Legacy mode.'

What is 'legacy mode?' And has anyone here tried using the new Dash in P3D? I'm debating whether to buy it or wait for the P3D version (who knows when that will be). My inclination right now is to wait, but wanted to get some thoughts.

Please do not get me wrong. I want p3d to make it more then anyone. I would hate to be left in an XPlane only world.

However if this is my experience.........then,............what gives

I only have so much time and patience for this and I have been going round and round with this for 2 weeks.

In March my install went fine. I have tried to re install after a Win7 64 bit re install.

P3d has been the first program I have tried to re install.

I downloaded the three zip files.

Then unzipeed into one folder as directed

My first try to re install I was prompted to re boot.

I did so. Norton was running. I got a pop up, not sure if from Norton or not.

I clicked no on install unknown software. (My mistake???? If so how to undo)

I am having trouble with .cab file 14 when running the install. It says a bgl is not found.

I tells me to uninstall and re install. As I have done.

This only happens some times.

Maybe if I uninstall with Ccleaner.

Any help or experience with this??

On the 2 out of 3 tries when it does install properly I am told.

"Prepar3D was unable to load some program files and will now exit.
Please reinstall Prepar3d to restore or repair the program installation."

This was posted on the P3d forum but no response.

They sell for $10 a month
Academic for $50
Or The 120 Package.

Seems they would provide some support at that rate as I got the academic version.
Since I purchased in March and am beyond refund limit I guess I get no support.

I have had experiences like this with car dealers. I purchased in March so I can no longer get a refund so tough luck.

Does anyone know of a good Cessna 182 for Prepar3D? What about the Flight 1 Cessna 182T? It appears to have a well-modeled G1000 that doesn't need replacing, but, does it even work in P3D?

I own a licensed copy of the Mindstar G1000, which is compatible with P3D but I don't really know what aircraft to use it with. I'd love to find a compatible 182 as I plan to get my PPL up to date and would like to "practice." I'm really not interested in Carenado's offering as the G1000 looks nice but basically is eye candy only, and while I hear the flight model is nice, I understand the Mindstar G1000 won't integrate well. So, any help is much appreciated.
